Why the 990 PRO fits editing
The 990 PRO combines high sequential throughput, strong random performance, DRAM and a mature PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. That makes it well suited to operating-system duties, media cache, active project files, proxies, preview renders and fast exports when installed in a properly cooled M.2 slot.
Editing performance still depends on codec, CPU and GPU decoding, memory, application settings and the number of simultaneous streams. A drive capable of 7GB/s does not guarantee smooth playback of a codec the processor cannot decode. Treat storage as one part of the complete pipeline.

Separate the five storage roles
A professional project can contain the operating system and application, original camera media, proxy files, media cache and previews, and export targets. Putting all five on one SSD is simple but makes capacity, backup and concurrent read-write traffic harder to manage.
