How to Initialize a Samsung 990 PRO in Windows
Initialize a new blank Samsung 990 PRO safely, choose GPT, create a volume and avoid overwriting a clone or drive that may contain recoverable data.
Initialize only a confirmed blank drive
A new secondary 990 PRO can be initialized as GPT and formatted. A clone, old disk or drive expected to contain data needs diagnosis first.
Verify the exact disk before writing metadata
Match model and approximate 1.82 TiB binary capacity. Formatting or initializing the wrong disk can destroy access to existing files.

Determine whether to initialize, mount, unlock, recover or troubleshoot the drive.
Windows disk-state decision table
| State | Meaning | Safe action | Do not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIOS only | Hardware detected, Windows path missing | Check controller and drivers | Format from random third-party tool |
| Not Initialized | Blank or damaged metadata | Initialize only if confirmed blank | Overwrite expected data |
| Unallocated | No usable volume | Create a volume if blank | Assume a clone succeeded |
| Partitions visible | Disk already initialized | Assign letter, unlock or repair | Reinitialize |

Find This Model on AmazonInitialization is only for a new blank or intentionally erased disk
Windows initialization writes partition-style metadata so the operating system can create volumes. It is appropriate for a new secondary SSD that has never held needed data. It is not a universal repair button for a missing, cloned or previously used drive.
If the 990 PRO should already contain Windows, a clone or valuable files, stop before initializing. The missing partitions may reflect controller mode, corruption or a recovery situation, and writing new metadata can complicate recovery.
- Confirm the drive history first
- Do not initialize an expected boot or data disk
Identify the exact disk before making changes
Open Disk Management and match the Samsung model, approximate capacity and disk number. A 2TB drive is expected to appear around 1.82 TiB in binary units before file-system and reserved-space effects. Disconnect unnecessary external drives if that makes identification safer.
Do not select a disk solely because it says Unknown or Not Initialized. Record the model from Device Manager, Magician or another hardware tool when possible.
- Match model, capacity and connection
- Never rely only on the disk number
Bring an offline disk online only when appropriate
A new disk can appear Offline because of policy, signature collision or a prior configuration. Right-clicking Online is usually safe for a genuinely new secondary drive, but a cloned disk may be offline because Windows detected a duplicate signature.
When the disk is a clone, preserve the source and resolve the duplicate carefully. Do not assign both source and clone writable roles until the migration plan is clear.
- New blank disk and clone require different handling
- Keep the source clone unchanged until validation
Choose GPT for modern Windows and UEFI
Microsoft recommends GPT for modern UEFI systems and large drives. GPT supports more partitions and is the normal choice for a new 2TB NVMe SSD used with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
MBR may be needed for older legacy systems or specific compatibility requirements, but it is not the default choice for a current 990 PRO host. Confirm the boot firmware and migration requirements before choosing.
- Use GPT for a modern UEFI system
- Choose MBR only for a documented legacy need
Create a volume and assign a drive letter
After initialization, right-click the unallocated space and create a New Simple Volume. Choose the size, drive letter and file system. NTFS is the normal choice for general Windows internal storage, while other file systems may suit cross-platform or specialized use.
A quick format creates the file-system structures without scanning every cell. A full format takes longer and writes much more data. Neither option should be run on a disk containing files that need recovery.
- Choose the file system for the workload
- Formatting destroys the selected volume’s data
Understand why File Explorer showed nothing
File Explorer displays mounted volumes, not every detected physical disk. A new 990 PRO can be visible in BIOS, Device Manager and Disk Management while remaining absent from Explorer because it has no partition, file system or drive letter.
This is a normal setup state for a blank secondary SSD. It is different from a drive missing from BIOS or Disk Management, which requires detection troubleshooting rather than initialization.
- Detection and mounting are separate layers
- Use Disk Management for blank-drive setup
Do not initialize a clone before first boot
A correctly cloned destination should already contain partition information. If Windows asks to initialize it, confirm that the clone completed and that the correct controller can see the device. Initializing may overwrite the partition map you intended to boot.
Shut down, disconnect the source when appropriate and test the clone according to the migration plan. Keep recovery media and the original drive available.
- A clone should not need blank-disk initialization
- Preserve the original until the new drive boots
Handle BitLocker and device encryption deliberately
A new secondary drive can be encrypted after it is initialized and formatted. A cloned Windows drive may carry BitLocker metadata and require the recovery key after hardware or boot changes.
Save the recovery key before migration. Do not confuse a locked encrypted volume with an uninitialized disk. Windows can detect the partition while denying access until it is unlocked.
- Preserve recovery keys before storage changes
- Identify encryption before rewriting partitions
Use the full capacity or plan over-provisioning
You may create one full-size volume or leave intentional unallocated space. Samsung Magician can support over-provisioning workflows, but the value depends on workload, free-space discipline and the drive’s internal management.
Do not leave unexplained unallocated space because a wizard was closed early. Record the intended partition plan and keep ordinary free space inside the volume as well.
- Distinguish planned over-provisioning from accidental unused space
- Keep adequate free space for normal operation
Troubleshoot initialization errors safely
An I/O error, disappearing disk or repeated failure to initialize is not normal for a new SSD. Check BIOS detection, controller mode, event logs, firmware and the physical connection before retrying writes.
If the drive contains needed data, stop. If it is a new return-window purchase, preserve screenshots and seller evidence rather than repeatedly stress-testing it.
- Repeated initialization failure needs diagnosis
- Protect data and return rights before further writes
Verify the result after formatting
The new volume should appear in File Explorer with the chosen label and drive letter. Confirm that Windows reports the expected capacity, Samsung Magician sees the drive, the firmware is current and no storage errors are logged.
Copy a small noncritical test set first. Then check temperature and sustained behavior before moving the only copy of important data.
- Verify model, volume, health and firmware
- Test with noncritical data before relying on the drive
When to use clean installation instead
If the 990 PRO will become the Windows boot drive, initializing it manually is often unnecessary. Boot the Windows installer in UEFI mode and let Setup create the EFI, recovery and system partitions automatically.
Manual partitioning can be useful for advanced layouts, but it increases the chance of putting boot files on another disk or creating the wrong partition style. Disconnect unrelated drives when practical.
- Let Windows Setup create boot partitions
- Keep unrelated disks disconnected when possible
