eGPU Power Supply Calculator

An eGPU power supply must cover the graphics card, dock electronics, transient spikes and connector requirements without operating continuously at its limit. This calculator produces a conservative PSU class and cable checklist.

Size the eGPU power supply

Enter card power and dock requirements before calculating.

Board power is only the starting point

Graphics cards can draw short transient loads above their average board-power rating. A suitable margin improves stability and keeps the power supply away from continuous maximum output.

The dock also consumes power

Open adapter boards use relatively little power, while enclosures with fans, USB hubs or charging features add more. Integrated eGPU products already include a matched adapter and should not be sized like an open dock.

Connector quality matters

Use the connector and cable arrangement specified by the GPU and PSU maker. Avoid improvised splitters and do not mix modular PSU cables from different power-supply models.

Oversizing has limits

A modest margin is useful, but an unnecessarily large PSU can cost more and take more space. Quality, protections and correct connectors matter more than the largest wattage number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a desktop ATX PSU with an open eGPU dock?

Yes, when the dock supports standard ATX startup control and the PSU provides the required GPU connectors.

Do I need an 850W PSU for every high-end GPU?

No. Size the PSU from the card reference power, transient margin, dock load and manufacturer recommendation.

Can I reuse a modular cable from another PSU?

Do not assume compatibility. Modular pinouts can differ and may damage hardware.
