Choose by workload before choosing the CPU tier
Compare N150 and Core 3 N355 mini PCs by the work the complete machine must perform. A light desktop or a small dedicated service may not need the more expensive CPU tier. Several concurrent applications or services can justify comparing an eight-core configuration, provided memory, storage and cooling support that work. Start with a practical service list and the connections you need rather than treating the higher model number as the answer.
For a new purchase, shortlist systems that meet those fixed requirements and compare their complete delivered prices. If you already own an N150, identify the limitation you want to solve before replacing it. A change that leaves the same storage, memory or port constraint in place may provide little practical benefit. The useful upgrade is the one that improves the actual installation, not simply the processor label on the order.
Comparing a Canadian delivered price
Use the Canadian-dollar prices shown here when shopping for a Canadian address. A US-dollar offer converted into CAD is not a Canadian delivered price. Confirm the selected seller, dispatch location, delivery charge and final checkout total for your province and postal code. Taxes and any import charges shown at checkout can change the comparison. A product family may contain several sellers and configurations, so record the exact CPU, memory, SSD and operating-system bundle rather than relying on the family name or enclosure photograph.
For a cross-border shipment, check the return address and the process for obtaining support before paying. A nominal saving can become less useful if returning the system requires an expensive international shipment. Confirm the supplied mains lead, the adapter input rating and any accessories needed for your display. Keep the order confirmation and model details. When the mini PC arrives, verify the installed components and activation status, then test the features that motivated the purchase before transferring important files or retiring your previous machine.
The processor difference and its limits
N150 has four cores and four threads, while Core 3 N355 has eight of each. Both belong to Intel’s Twin Lake product generation, so this is not simply a comparison between an old generation and a new one. Their published turbo and graphics specifications differ, but those figures do not establish a fixed application-performance advantage for every complete mini PC.
A workload needs useful parallel work to benefit from additional cores. One busy thread, insufficient memory or a slow storage path can still determine responsiveness. Cooling and firmware power settings affect what a small enclosure sustains. Use the specification table to identify the processors and seek measurements of the exact system when performance matters. Do not turn a seller’s broad faster-than claim into a measured result.
Light office work and an everyday desktop
For documents, browsing and everyday communication, compare suitably configured N150 models before assuming N355 is necessary. Installed RAM, SSD capacity, monitor connections and noise affect day-to-day usability. A machine that fits your existing desk and display setup may be a better purchase than a higher-tier system needing extra adapters or offering a less useful service arrangement.
Consider how many applications are actively working at the same time. Several busy tasks are different from several mostly idle windows. An N355 system may be worth comparing when concurrent processing is the real constraint, but it still needs appropriate memory and storage. If demanding editing, modern gaming or substantial local AI is central to the purchase, evaluate stronger platforms rather than assuming every eight-core processor belongs to the same performance class.
Containers and an always-on home server
For a small server, list the services that run together and the periods when backups, indexing or updates overlap. Additional cores can provide useful capacity when the service mix generates parallel CPU work. They are less decisive when the workload mainly waits for network or storage activity. An existing installation’s resource measurements can make this distinction clearer than a generic home-server recommendation.
Allow resources for the host operating system, logs, updates and recovery. Keep independent backups and document how to restore essential services. Avoid moving every household function onto one machine before understanding its maintenance and failure implications. For a dedicated Home Assistant installation, follow the project’s current generic x86-64 instructions, including storage and recovery requirements, instead of assuming that the factory operating system is ready for that role.
Virtual machines and memory headroom
Several interactive virtual machines can create a different requirement from lightweight containers. Add the concurrent guest memory needs and storage activity before deciding that more CPU cores are sufficient. Check the current virtualisation platform requirements and the system’s firmware options. Processor virtualisation features do not establish support for every device or every intended use of the network and storage controllers.
Intel lists the same 16 GB maximum and one memory channel for these processors. Larger system configurations advertised by a vendor need confirmation for the exact machine and revision. Choosing N355 does not automatically establish a higher official memory ceiling. If the workload depends on substantially more memory or expansion than the platform documents, compare a more suitable class of system before paying for a CPU change alone.
Match installed RAM, SSD and software contents
Make price comparisons between complete configurations. Match installed RAM and SSD capacity where possible, then inspect service access and upgrade costs. A higher N355 price can reflect different included components, a specialist enclosure or seller availability rather than the CPU alone. Supported capacity in a description is not the same as memory or storage supplied with the chosen offer.
Confirm the software contents as well. A complete hardware configuration can be sold without an operating system, while a barebones kit may omit memory or storage. Add the parts and software required for your job before judging value. Check the selected variant again at checkout because a product family can change the processor or installed configuration when you choose an option or seller.
Network ports and appliance designs
If routing or firewall work is the objective, compare controller models, port count, link speed and operating-system support on the finished appliance. VPNs, traffic inspection and several busy interfaces can create a different workload from basic forwarding. More cores do not establish a particular routing result, and a row of Ethernet sockets in a photograph does not identify the controllers behind them.
Compare the enclosure and service arrangement alongside the CPU. A specialist N355 appliance and an N150 desk computer may not be equivalent products even when both appear in mini PC searches. Price the required RAM, SSD, power adapter and any network accessories. Retain a fallback connection and a configuration backup when testing a replacement for the equipment that currently provides your internet access.
Media uses and graphics claims
For Plex, Jellyfin or ordinary media playback, determine whether the client can play the original file or whether conversion is needed. Codec, resolution, subtitles, audio, drivers and application settings affect that path. The integrated-graphics specification does not supply a dependable simultaneous-stream count for your collection. Check the media application’s current hardware-acceleration requirements for the operating system you plan to use.
Test representative files during the return period, including the more difficult combinations you actually watch. For a connected display, verify the finished machine’s outputs, resolutions and refresh rates. USB-C does not automatically provide video or USB4, and processor display capabilities do not guarantee implementation on the case. An appropriately configured N150 can remain worth comparing when the intended media job does not justify the higher system cost.
Cooling and ownership-cost scenarios
A fanless N355 appliance and a small ventilated N150 desktop can have very different thermal behaviour. Placement, room temperature and firmware settings matter alongside processor choice. Seek model-level noise and sustained-work evidence where those factors determine the installation. A fanless enclosure removes fan noise but does not guarantee low temperatures or unrestricted performance during continuous work.
Use the calculator with comparable complete prices and measured average system power where available. Intel’s processor power figures are not readings at the wall, and the initial watt inputs are examples rather than test results. Apply the same operating hours, tariff and ownership period to both systems. Include needed parts and software in the purchase price, and consider support and recovery arrangements alongside the numerical cost scenario.
When the N355 premium is justified
Compare an N355 system when concurrent processing is a real need and the complete machine also meets the memory, storage, network and cooling requirements. Prefer the lower-cost N150 option when it performs the light job with the necessary connections and support. If a specialist enclosure or extra ports explain much of the price difference, evaluate those features directly rather than attributing the whole premium to CPU speed.
Before ordering, keep a record of the selected model and configuration, seller terms and delivered Canada total. On arrival, verify the CPU and installed components, test essential connections and retain recovery information before changing software. Move important services gradually and preserve independent backups. A well-chosen system should resolve a practical requirement and remain maintainable, rather than simply moving the purchase to a higher model number.
Electricity and service continuity in Canada
For an always-on server, enter your own electricity unit rate in Canadian dollars per kWh. The editable calculator value is an illustration, not a provincial average or a current tariff quote. If your rate changes by time or season, use a representative weighted input or calculate the periods separately. Fixed charges that remain unchanged with the purchase should not be treated as incremental mini PC consumption. Measure the complete computer with the storage and adapters it normally uses; Intel’s processor power rating is not that measurement.
Consider support and recovery alongside the hardware price. Check that firmware, driver and recovery downloads identify the exact model, and keep a separate copy of important service settings and files. Where an interruption would cause problems, plan an orderly shutdown and test the intended restart behaviour. A UPS can help with a short interruption but is a separate purchase and power load. Confirm local delivery and return conditions for your address, particularly if a listing uses a third-party seller or ships from outside Canada.
Compare complete ownership cost
Enter comparable complete-system prices and your own electricity tariff. The starting 10 W and 15 W values are illustrative inputs, not processor measurements or country averages.
Estimated ownership cost = complete price + watts × hours/day × 365 ÷ 1000 × tariff × years. Excludes repairs, resale, peripherals and tariff changes.

Are N150 and N355 from different Intel generations?
Both are listed in Intel’s Twin Lake generation. N150 has four cores and four threads; Core 3 N355 has eight of each. Compare the complete systems rather than treating the choice only as old versus new.
When should I pay more for an N355 system?
Compare N355 when concurrent CPU work justifies eight cores and the whole machine also has the memory, storage, networking, cooling and support the job requires. A light task may not need the higher total cost.
Is N355 automatically better for Plex or Jellyfin?
No fixed stream-count advantage follows from the CPU name. Check the playback path, codecs, subtitles, clients, operating system, graphics driver and application acceleration requirements.
Do the calculator’s initial watts come from measurements?
No. They are editable examples. Enter measured whole-system averages where available, prices for comparable complete systems, the same operating schedule and your own tariff.
How should I compare local prices?
Use CAD offers from Amazon Canada and confirm the selected configuration, delivery, checkout taxes and return destination. Overseas converted prices are not local offers. Each card shows when its price was checked.
