What should you buy?

For a Frigate PoE deployment, buy cameras with verified local streams and a practical main/substream combination, then size the PoE switch for both port count and total wattage. Favor a consistent exact model where it simplifies configuration, but use scene-specific cameras when lens, night or weather requirements differ.

Match the deal to the job

PoE port count and power budget are separate limits

A switch can advertise eight or sixteen PoE ports while providing a total power budget that is lower than the sum of every endpoint's maximum draw. Cameras may also draw more when infrared illuminators, heaters or other features are active. Add the expected worst-case load and preserve margin instead of dividing the total wattage by the number of ports after installation.

This is especially important during Black Friday when a camera multipurchase and switch discount can tempt you to buy the infrastructure together. Calculate the powered-endpoint budget before checkout. If the switch cannot run the selected cameras with reserve, it is not the right deal even if the camera price is excellent.

One cable is valuable only when the cabling is sound

PoE reduces power-adapter clutter and makes central UPS protection possible, but it depends on Ethernet runs that are properly installed and terminated. Long runs, damaged cable, marginal connectors and poor outdoor protection can create intermittent camera problems that look like software faults.

Plan cable routes before deciding how many cameras to buy. For exterior locations, protect junctions and use installation methods appropriate to the environment. The camera's PoE capability simplifies the endpoint; it does not remove the need for a reliable physical network.

Choose a switch that matches the surveillance architecture

A dedicated camera VLAN is common in more controlled deployments because it limits what cameras can reach and makes traffic policies easier to reason about. If that is part of the design, the switch needs the management features and tagged/untagged behavior required by the router or firewall architecture.

A small simple Frigate installation may be perfectly happy on an unmanaged PoE switch. Do not pay for management features with no use. But if VLANs, monitoring or redundant uplinks are part of the plan, a cheaper unmanaged switch can become an expensive replacement later.

Camera bitrate determines uplink demand

Surveillance traffic is usually modest compared with 2.5GbE and 10GbE storage benchmarks, but it is continuous. Multiply the actual configured bitrates rather than the advertised camera resolutions. Include both the traffic arriving at the Frigate host and any recording path that leaves the host for network storage.

A 1GbE uplink can support many conventional camera streams, yet a large system with high-bitrate recording and other network services may justify more. Use the network bandwidth planner instead of buying a multi-gig switch simply because it is part of a Black Friday bundle.

Local streams still matter more than PoE

PoE only solves power delivery. It does not prove that the camera exposes RTSP, ONVIF or the specific stream controls needed by your Frigate design. Treat local-stream documentation as a separate requirement and verify it before purchase.

The best PoE camera is therefore not necessarily the model with the highest resolution or largest discount. A camera with dependable local streams, useful substream controls and stable firmware can reduce host load and troubleshooting time enough to justify a modest price premium.

Outdoor PoE cameras need connector planning

An outdoor camera may have a weather-rated body while the Ethernet pigtail or coupler still needs proper protection. Follow the exact installation instructions for drip loops, glands, junction boxes or protected connections where required. Water ingress at the connector can defeat the benefit of an otherwise rugged camera.

Do not use an accessory listing as a substitute for the camera itself. The Black Friday catalogue intentionally filters mounts, junction boxes and other accessories so the live price comparison stays focused on the actual camera. Budget those installation parts separately once the model is selected.

Central UPS protection is a hidden PoE advantage

When cameras are powered from one or a few PoE switches, backing up the switch and Frigate host with a UPS can keep the surveillance system alive through short outages. That can be cleaner than trying to protect many separate camera power adapters scattered around the property.

If resilience matters, include the switch's power draw and camera load when sizing the UPS. Do not assume a VA rating guarantees a specific runtime. The Black Friday camera budget may therefore include network power infrastructure, not only the endpoints.

Standardize only where the scenes are similar

Buying eight identical cameras can simplify firmware, stream configuration and spare-parts planning. It works best when the scenes have similar field-of-view, weather and low-light needs. A driveway, narrow side passage and indoor hallway may be better served by different lenses or sensor characteristics.

Use Black Friday quantity pricing carefully. Standardization is valuable, but buying a uniform set to capture a bundle discount can produce poorer coverage and a later replacement cost. A mixed deployment of validated models can be the lower total-cost system.

Judge the deal on unit cost and infrastructure cost

Track the camera's per-unit price separately from the cost of the switch, cabling and retention storage. A camera price can fall sharply while the complete expansion still exceeds budget because the existing switch has no spare ports or wattage.
