For most builds, prioritize reliable local RTSP/ONVIF-capable cameras, a host with hardware video-decoding options, and an accelerator that is actually supported by your intended Frigate release. A genuine Black Friday win is a complete-system saving, not simply the largest percentage-off label.

Match the deal to the job

Build from the workload, not the sale banner

Frigate sizing begins with what the cameras will actually send. Camera count matters, but resolution, frame rate, codec, detect-stream choice and whether the main stream is being recorded all change the host load. Two eight-camera systems can have very different hardware requirements when one uses efficient substreams and the other asks the host to process high-resolution streams unnecessarily.

Black Friday encourages buyers to start with a product and justify it afterward. Reverse that order. Write down the planned camera count, detect resolution, recording requirement and the features you expect to enable. Then let the event price decide between hardware that already satisfies the plan. Choose the host around decode and expansion needs

The Frigate host does more than run object detection. It handles the operating environment, camera connections, video decoding, recording coordination, the database and any enrichments you enable. Efficient Intel mini PCs remain attractive for compact deployments because hardware video decoding can reduce CPU pressure, but the exact processor generation, graphics path and Frigate configuration still need to be checked.

Leave practical headroom instead of purchasing exactly to a spreadsheet minimum. Additional cameras, higher-quality streams, face recognition, semantic search, another container or a future detector can change the balance. Spending a little more on a host with adequate memory, storage and I/O can be cheaper than replacing a bargain system a few months later.

Treat camera compatibility as a local-stream question

A security camera is useful to Frigate when it can provide stable local video streams in formats and resolutions that fit your design. Marketing terms such as AI camera, smart detection or cloud recording do not prove that the camera exposes the local RTSP or ONVIF behavior you need. Verify the exact model and firmware rather than relying on a family name.

Prefer a camera that lets you use a lower-resolution substream for detection while preserving a higher-quality main stream for recording when your design calls for it. That separation can reduce decode and detection load without giving up recorded detail. If the listing is vague about local streams, treat the uncertainty as a cost rather than assuming the feature exists.

PoE simplifies power only when the budget is real

PoE cameras can make a Frigate deployment cleaner because one Ethernet run can carry both data and power. The switch still has two separate constraints: enough powered ports and enough total wattage. A nominal eight-port PoE switch is not automatically sized for eight cameras if the combined power draw or startup peaks exceed its budget.

Account for future cameras and any PoE access points or other powered devices sharing the switch. A discounted switch can be a false economy when it requires injectors for the last few endpoints. Coral and Hailo solve different buying problems

Dedicated accelerators can move object detection away from the general-purpose CPU, but an accelerator is not a universal plug-in performance upgrade. Coral variants use different physical interfaces, while Hailo products appear in several module and kit formats. The host must have the right slot, USB path or carrier arrangement, and the software version must support the detector path you intend to configure.

Do not compare accelerators only by advertised TOPS. Detector implementation, model support, host interface, thermals and Frigate configuration all matter. A lower-cost accelerator that drops cleanly into the existing host can be a better Black Friday purchase than a faster module that requires a carrier, a different system or a more complicated deployment.

Storage can erase the savings from cheap cameras

Recording retention is often the largest capacity decision in a Frigate system. More cameras, higher bitrates and longer retention can require far more storage than the host itself. Calculate recording capacity separately from the small SSD or NVMe device used for the operating system and application data.

A camera deal that encourages higher resolution everywhere can increase storage cost for years. Before checkout, total the host, accelerator, camera count, PoE switching, storage, cabling and any adapters or mounts that are genuinely required. The best Frigate Black Friday build is the one that meets today's camera workload, has sensible expansion room and costs less than a comparable pre-event system.
