Local backup storage
A backup DAS should make copies easy to run and easy to restore. Maximum benchmark speed is less important than predictable drive access, enough capacity for version history and another copy elsewhere.
Easy local redundancy, but still keep another copy elsewhere.
Better for version history and multiple computers.
Individual disks can be rotated or assigned to separate backup jobs.

Capacity planner
Estimate usable storage before choosing the enclosure
Enter equal-sized drives to compare raw and usable capacity across common array layouts. This is a planning estimate, not a substitute for a backup strategy.
Buying guidance
What to check before you buy
Capacity headroom makes backups more useful
If the source data already fills most of the backup target, version history will be short and large changes can cause backup failures. Plan substantial free space beyond current usage.
Several computers can share one large local backup target, but the enclosure should not be the only backup location.
Mirroring is not a second backup location
RAID 1 keeps two copies inside the same enclosure. It helps when one drive fails, but both copies remain exposed to deletion, malware, theft and enclosure damage.
A strong backup plan keeps another copy disconnected, on another system or in another location.
Quiet operation can matter more than peak speed
Backup jobs often run for hours or overnight. Fan acoustics, drive vibration and reliable sleep behavior can matter more than a connection far faster than the installed hard drives.
USB 10Gbps is adequate for many HDD backup arrays, while faster links can reduce time for SSD-based backups.
Decision table
Backup enclosure choices
| Factor | Mirrored DAS | JBOD backup set |
|---|---|---|
| Drive failure protection | Mirror can survive one member failure | Depends on the selected disk and copy strategy |
| Capacity efficiency | About half with two equal drives | Can use full capacity of each independent disk |
| Rotation | Less convenient | Easy to assign or rotate individual disks |
| Best fit | Always-connected local backup | Separated backup jobs and rotation |

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Should backup DAS use RAID 1?
RAID 1 is useful for local resilience, but it should complement rather than replace another backup copy.
How large should a backup enclosure be?
Choose enough usable capacity for current data plus version history and growth. A target substantially larger than current usage is easier to maintain.
Can I turn off a DAS when backup is finished?
Yes if your workflow supports it. A disconnected copy reduces exposure to some failures and malware, but shut the enclosure down cleanly.
