Quick answer
Match the drive protocol and physical size first, then check enclosure power and the slowest data link between the drive and computer.
Drive protocol, M.2 length, stated capacity support, 3.5-inch power needs, enclosure link speed and host bandwidth are checked as separate constraints.
Confirm the exact enclosure model and selected variation. A USB-C connector alone does not prove NVMe support, 20Gbps operation, USB4 support or Thunderbolt compatibility.
Compatibility check
Check the complete drive-to-computer path
Choose the drive, enclosure and host connection. You can select a current enclosure from the list or enter the important limits manually.
The result will identify protocol, size, power and bandwidth limits separately.

Enclosures to compare after the compatibility check
Use the tool first, then compare only products whose drive support and link speed fit the result. Prices and availability can change after the last check.

Buying guide
How to avoid the common enclosure compatibility mistakes
Most failed enclosure purchases come from one mismatched layer: the drive protocol, the M.2 length, power delivery or a host port that is slower than expected.
NVMe and M.2 SATA are not interchangeable
The M.2 shape does not identify the storage protocol. An NVMe-only enclosure can reject an M.2 SATA drive even when both use the 2280 form factor.
Dual-protocol products should state support for both NVMe and SATA rather than relying on the connector shape.
Match M.2 length as well as protocol
2280 is common, but handheld systems and compact devices may use 2230 or 2242 drives. The mounting position inside the enclosure must support the installed length.
3.5-inch hard drives need more power
A desktop hard drive normally requires an external power source. A bus-powered adapter that is suitable for a 2.5-inch drive should not be assumed to power a 3.5-inch disk.
The slowest link sets the speed ceiling
A fast NVMe drive does not make a 10Gbps enclosure faster. The useful ceiling is set by the slowest part of the host port, enclosure connection, bridge controller and drive.
Capacity limits deserve a model check
Some products state a maximum supported drive capacity while others do not. Treat an unstated limit as unknown rather than assuming every future drive capacity will work.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Will an NVMe enclosure work with an M.2 SATA SSD?
Only when the enclosure explicitly supports both protocols. NVMe-only products do not become SATA-compatible because the drive uses the same M.2 length.
Can a PCIe 5.0 SSD work in a slower enclosure?
It can when the enclosure supports NVMe and the physical drive length, but performance will be limited by the enclosure and host connection.
Why does a 40Gbps enclosure run much slower than 40Gbps?
The link rate is not the same as file-copy throughput. Encoding, protocol overhead, the bridge controller, SSD behavior, thermals and the host all reduce real transfer speed.
Can I run a 3.5-inch HDD from USB power alone?
Usually no. Desktop hard drives normally need an enclosure or dock with its own power supply.
Does macOS change enclosure compatibility?
The storage protocol still has to match, and some USB modes are less common on Macs. Verify the exact Mac port capability and the enclosure compatibility statement before buying.
