Five bays give a storage planner more choices than the common four-bay format. In RAID 5, five matching drives provide roughly four drives worth of usable capacity. Five-bay enclosures often advertise RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, JBOD and proprietary span or clone modes. Look for documented rebuild behavior, clear status indicators and a utility or switch system you can understand before data is loaded.

Some five-bay products expose independent disks and rely on the host for software RAID. That can be a valid design, especially on a dedicated workstation or server, but it should not be mistaken for a hardware array. If the host changes, software compatibility can become the deciding factor.

Capacity claims and drive limits

A five-bay product advertised for 100TB may be assuming five 20TB drives. Newer models may claim larger totals as drive validation changes. Check both the maximum per drive and the maximum total. The controller, firmware, partition scheme and operating system can all influence practical support.

For long-lived storage, buy enough capacity for growth without filling every bay unnecessarily. If expansion is not supported, adding a drive later may require copying data elsewhere and recreating the array.
