SkyHawk AI model buying guide
SkyHawk AI contains multiple exact revisions at 12TB, 16TB and 20TB. This list keeps each VE model separate so capacity pages and Amazon offers do not inherit the wrong cache or transfer specification.
Quick answer
SkyHawk AI spans 8TB to 32TB in the models listed here. These are CMR, 7,200 RPM surveillance drives with the higher 550TB/year workload tier and five-year warranty, but cache and sustained-transfer figures vary by exact VE model. Match the exact model before buying several drives.

Buying guide
What to know before you buy
The AI family begins at 8TB
ST8000VE001 provides the 8TB entry point and ST10000VE001 covers 10TB. These models suit buyers who need the AI workload tier before they need the very largest capacities.
At 8TB, compare the AI model directly with standard SkyHawk because both families are available at the same raw capacity.
There are two 12TB revisions
ST12000VE001 and ST12000VE003 are both 12TB SkyHawk AI models. They do not share the same cache and listed sustained-transfer figures, so one model's specification must not be applied to the other.
Amazon variation pages can surface one model in feature text and another in the structured product field. Exact identity remains mandatory.
The 16TB range contains several revisions
ST16000VE002, ST16000VE004 and ST16000VE005 appear in current SkyHawk AI documentation. They share the family workload and warranty tier but differ in cache and published maximum sustained transfer.
Buyers should not accept a listing that omits the model number when performance or system validation depends on a particular revision.
The 20TB range also requires exact matching
ST20000VE002, ST20000VE003 and ST20000VE004 are separate models. This is especially important in enterprise-scale NVRs where multiple drives are purchased and consistent firmware or performance characteristics may be required.
Use one exact model across a new array when the recorder vendor recommends matched drives.
24TB improves bay efficiency
ST24000VE002 provides 24TB per bay. It can reduce the number of drives required for a retention target, but the recorder must support the capacity and the design must account for rebuild time and the larger amount of data exposed by one drive failure.
Compare the cost of extra bays, drives, power and spare capacity rather than looking only at the single-drive price.
32TB is the current capacity ceiling listed here
ST32000VE000 is the 32TB SkyHawk AI model. It is positioned for very high-capacity AI-enabled NVR and edge-video analytics systems.
A 32TB SATA drive should not be ordered until the recorder or controller explicitly supports it. BIOS, firmware, sector formatting and enclosure cooling can all become limiting factors.
All listed AI models share the higher family tier
The current family materials list CMR, 7,200 RPM operation, up to 64 HD streams plus up to 32 AI streams, a 550TB-per-year workload rating and a five-year limited warranty.
These family specifications do not erase model-level differences in cache, transfer rate, power or acoustics.
Use exact-model procurement for multi-drive systems
For multi-drive systems, record the approved model number, seller, warranty route and firmware before ordering. On delivery, check every label rather than assuming all units in a shipment are identical.
This matters most when buying several drives at once because a substituted revision can complicate support, performance expectations and future replacements.
Before you buy a SkyHawk drive
- Match the exact model number and capacity to your recorder's supported-drive list.
- Confirm whether the model is standard SkyHawk, SkyHawk AI or an older revision.
- Check the seller, condition and regional warranty route before checkout.
- Size the drive for the retention period you actually need, with room for future camera growth.
