Standard SkyHawk and SkyHawk AI solve different problems

The standard SkyHawk family is designed around continuous surveillance recording. Its current tracked capacities run from 1TB to 8TB and the family is positioned for up to 64 HD camera streams. SkyHawk AI starts at 8TB and expands to 32TB, adding a much higher annual workload tier and support for concurrent AI-analysis streams.

The presence of smart detection in a camera does not automatically mean the recorder needs SkyHawk AI. The deciding factors are the number of active analytics streams, annual writes, enclosure scale, drive capacity and the recorder manufacturer's approved-drive limits.

Use the exact model number, not only the capacity

SkyHawk model numbers use the VX series for standard surveillance drives and the VE series for SkyHawk AI. The exact suffix matters because Seagate has issued multiple revisions and service bundles at the same capacity. A product title that says only “SkyHawk 4TB” does not provide enough information to assign recording technology or Rescue coverage.

Storage retention is the real capacity question

A drive capacity is useful only when translated into recording days. Retention depends on camera count, bitrate, codec, recording schedule, motion activity, audio, metadata and recorder reserve. Two eight-camera systems can have radically different storage requirements when one records 1080p motion clips and the other records high-bitrate 4K video continuously.

Plan with a safety margin. A recorder can consume additional space for indexing and file-system overhead, while variable bitrate cameras may exceed their average during complex scenes.

Camera-stream limits do not replace a storage calculation

A stream-support figure describes how many video streams the firmware and drive family are designed to handle. It does not tell you how many days the footage will remain. Sixty-four low-bitrate streams may use less storage than a much smaller set of high-bitrate 4K cameras.

Treat stream count, annual workload and raw capacity as separate checks. The system must pass all three before a drive family is considered suitable.

Workload and warranty separate the two tiers

Current standard SkyHawk documentation lists a 180TB-per-year workload tier and a three-year limited warranty. SkyHawk AI raises the workload tier to 550TB per year and carries a five-year limited warranty in the current family. These figures are family-selection boundaries, not a promise that any individual drive cannot fail.

A backup or redundant recorder design remains necessary. RAID availability does not replace an independent copy of footage that has legal, safety or business value.

Health Management depends on recorder support

SkyHawk Health Management can expose surveillance-specific drive-health information on supported recorders. Compatibility is not universal. A drive may include the feature while a particular DVR or NVR never displays it.

Amazon listings need strict classification

Amazon can return complete NVR systems, external drives, old Seagate Surveillance HDDs, SkyHawk AI substitutions, standard SkyHawk substitutions, multipacks and recertified stock for a broad SkyHawk search. Capacity variation pages can also expose a title and model field that do not describe the same item.

Build the recorder around retention and expansion
