ST8000VX009 and ST8000VX010 are the tracked current standard 8TB models. They use CMR, 5,400 RPM operation, 256MB cache and the 180TB-per-year standard surveillance workload tier.

SkyHawk AI begins at the same 8TB capacity
ST8000VE001 is the tracked 8TB SkyHawk AI model. It uses CMR and 7,200 RPM operation with a higher workload tier, longer warranty and support for concurrent AI streams in the family positioning.
The AI model is not automatically better for every recorder. Standard SkyHawk may provide the right balance for ordinary continuous recording.
Use the 8TB capacity efficiently
Eight terabytes can increase retention or preserve bays in a recorder that supports the drive. It is often more practical than filling every bay with smaller disks, but a single large disk still needs a backup plan for footage that cannot be lost.
Format reserve and decimal-versus-binary capacity mean the recorder will show less than the advertised 8TB.
Retention depends on bitrate, not camera count alone
Sixteen 1080p cameras can produce very different storage consumption depending on frame rate, codec and scene complexity. A 4K camera at a high bitrate can consume several times the storage of a low-bitrate 1080p stream.
Use recorder measurements where possible and calculate with a margin rather than relying on a generic “days per camera” chart.
Confirm the recorder supports 8TB drives
Some older NVRs have lower per-bay limits. A drive may spin and appear in diagnostics but fail to initialize fully when the firmware or partition scheme cannot handle the capacity.

Power, heat and acoustics depend on the exact tier
A 7,200 RPM SkyHawk AI model can have different power, heat and acoustic behavior from a 5,400 RPM standard SkyHawk. The recorder enclosure must provide adequate cooling and secure mounting.
