Only fresh, new-condition IronWolf and IronWolf Pro HDD offers from the existing Cloudzat catalogue are eligible. SSDs, enclosures, NAS appliances, SAS drives, multipacks and non-new listings are rejected.

Audit the current array first
Record the NAS model, operating-system version, RAID type, file system, drive count, exact model numbers, health status and actual used space. Confirm whether any member already has warnings. An upgrade should not begin by stressing an unhealthy array.
Run a backup and restore test. A job marked successful is less valuable than evidence that critical files can be opened from the independent copy.
Choose between adding, replacing and migrating
Adding drives uses free bays and can be the simplest route when the RAID type supports expansion. Replacing members preserves the enclosure but requires repeated rebuilds. Building a new array offers a clean migration and rollback path but costs more upfront.
The best strategy depends on downtime tolerance, bay availability, current drive age and whether the existing NAS supports the target capacities.
Replacing members one at a time
Shut down if required by the platform, replace the identified member, start the rebuild and wait until the pool is fully healthy. Verify alerts and backups before repeating. High-capacity rebuilds can take much longer than a theoretical sequential copy.
Extra space may not become usable until all members or a required subset have been upgraded. Read the vendor procedure before buying only one larger drive.
Adding drives to free bays
Free-bay expansion avoids discarding healthy capacity and can improve total throughput. It also adds another spindle, increasing power, heat and future replacement count. Some layouts cannot be expanded by one member or cannot change redundancy level in place.
Check whether the pool, volume and file system expand automatically or require separate operations.
When a new array is the safer path
A new array allows old and new systems to exist simultaneously during migration. It is often safer when the current drives are old, the file system or RAID layout needs changing, or the existing NAS cannot support the target capacity.
Copy data, verify checksums or file counts, test applications, then retain the old system temporarily as an additional rollback copy where practical.
Capacity, reserve and future bays
The target should include current data, growth, snapshots and free-space reserve. Do not upgrade from a nearly full array into another nearly full array. Preserving one or two bays can make the next expansion materially easier.
Compare fewer large drives with more smaller drives. The cheapest raw terabytes may not provide the best upgrade path.
Standard IronWolf versus Pro during an upgrade
Moving beyond 16TB per drive requires the tracked Pro range. A business may also use the upgrade to standardize on the higher workload tier and five-year warranty. A home user can remain on standard IronWolf when capacity and workload fit.
Mixing families during a staged upgrade is possible in many systems, but the array should be operated under conservative assumptions until the transition is complete.
Post-upgrade verification
After capacity expansion, confirm the pool, volume and file system report the expected size. Run SMART and platform health checks, monitor temperatures, review backup selections and update the documentation with new serial numbers and warranty dates.
Do not immediately erase the only prior copy. Allow the upgraded system to operate and complete a full backup cycle before retiring the old storage.
