The result estimates future working space and chooses a tracked standard or Pro drive. Use the NAS vendor’s compatibility list before ordering.

Why raw capacity is the wrong starting point

Adding the labels on the drives produces raw capacity. It does not show parity, mirroring, file-system overhead, snapshots or working-space reserve. A four-drive 12TB array begins with 48TB raw, but simplified RAID 5 planning yields 36TB before those additional deductions.

Start with the data that must remain usable, then work backward through the protection layout. This prevents an array from being technically large but operationally full soon after deployment.

Measure current data before forecasting

Separate replaceable data from irreplaceable data, and identify data that will be deleted or archived. Backup repositories may use deduplication or retention rules that make folder size a poor predictor. Media, photos, surveillance and project files can have different growth patterns.

Use several months of real measurements where possible. A single growth percentage is still an estimate, but it becomes more defensible when derived from observed additions.

Apply compound growth carefully

The planner compounds the selected annual growth rate. That is conservative for collections that grow in proportion to their existing size. Other workloads grow by a roughly fixed number of terabytes each year, so compare both methods if the decision is expensive.

Do not extend the forecast indefinitely. Hardware, applications and NAS support can change over a decade. A three- to five-year horizon usually balances headroom against overbuying.

Snapshots and version history consume real space

Snapshots are not full duplicate copies in many file systems, but changed blocks accumulate. Backup versions and recycle bins can also retain more data than users expect. The allowance should reflect how often files change and how long versions are kept.

Monitor snapshot growth after deployment. If the allowance is consistently exceeded, adjust retention or expand before the volume becomes constrained.

RAID overhead by layout

RAID 1 uses the capacity of one drive in a two-drive mirror. RAID 5 generally uses one drive equivalent for parity, RAID 6 uses two, and RAID 10 provides half the raw capacity when built from mirrored pairs. These are simplified equal-drive calculations.

Vendor-specific hybrid layouts can use mixed sizes differently. The calculator does not replace the NAS vendor’s own capacity tool or migration documentation.

Bay efficiency versus price per terabyte

Smaller drives may have the best purchase price per raw terabyte, while larger drives preserve bays and simplify future growth. A free bay has economic value because it can delay a chassis replacement and reduce the disruption of an upgrade.

Compare the complete configuration cost, including the enclosure, spare drives, electricity and the capacity that remains unavailable because of RAID.

When the planner moves from standard to Pro

The current tracked standard family tops out at 16TB. If the selected bay count and RAID layout require a larger per-drive capacity, the recommendation moves into IronWolf Pro. Heavy workloads or larger commercial arrays can also justify Pro before capacity forces the change.

Check current prices. A Pro model can occasionally be close enough in price that the longer warranty and workload headroom improve the overall choice.

Validate the result before purchasing

Confirm the NAS supports the exact model and capacity, especially for 20TB through 32TB drives. Check firmware requirements, power and cooling, seller condition, regional warranty eligibility and return terms. Buy by model number rather than a broad capacity title.

Keep an independent backup and a documented expansion plan. Capacity planning reduces disruption, but it cannot remove failure risk.
