How to find the model number
The model is printed on the drive label and may appear in the NAS storage manager, SMART information, operating-system device list, purchase invoice or retailer variation. Seagate HDD models commonly begin with ST followed by capacity and family characters.
Record the model before removing a healthy drive. A photo of every bay label can be useful when the enclosure UI later reports a fault.
Why capacity is not a unique identity
Two drives can share capacity and family branding while using different rotational speeds, transfer specifications, acoustics or platform generations. Retail pages often group those variations under one title and reuse a generic specification table.
The standard 8TB models demonstrate the problem. ST8000VN002 is the lower-RPM option, while ST8000VN004 is the 7,200 RPM model. Buying “IronWolf 8TB” without checking the suffix leaves an important decision unresolved.
VN and NT family markers
The tracked standard models use VN identifiers, while current tracked Pro models use NT identifiers. Older IronWolf Pro generations can use NE identifiers. These patterns help with orientation but should not replace an official model lookup.
A seller title can contain a typo, so compare the listing, product image and label after delivery. Return a drive when the received model is not the one ordered.
What the workload rating means
The current standard family is rated for 180TB per year, while the tracked current Pro tier is rated higher. Workload is the total data transferred to and from the drive over a year under the product definition. It is not available free capacity and it is not a promise that a drive will fail immediately above a threshold.
Use it as one factor when separating a moderate home NAS from a heavily shared commercial system.
Warranty and Rescue are model-specific benefits
Current standard IronWolf carries a three-year limited warranty and three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services where available. Current IronWolf Pro carries a five-year limited warranty and three years of Rescue where available. Eligibility depends on product, region and seller route.
Check the serial number after delivery. A family description on a marketplace page does not prove warranty eligibility.
Current versus legacy models
Seagate has sold multiple generations under the IronWolf name. A model omitted from the current tracked table may be legitimate legacy stock rather than counterfeit. Its specifications must be read from the correct archived data sheet.
Do not apply a current model’s workload, speed or warranty to a legacy drive without verification. Used and recertified drives require separate condition and remaining-life evaluation.
