Two generations share 24TB

The 24TB name now covers Exos X24 and Exos M. Never apply one model’s speed or recording technology to the other.

X24 is conventional CMR

ST24000NM002H uses CMR, 512MB cache and publishes up to 285MB/s. It supports FastFormat on the tracked X24 configuration.

Exos M uses HAMR-CMR

ST24000NM001K uses Seagate’s Mozaic HAMR platform while presenting a normal SATA block interface. Its published maximum sustained transfer is lower than the tracked X24 model.

HAMR does not mean host-managed SMR

Exos M channel models are CMR drives. They should not be confused with Exos Xz host-managed SMR products.

Sector format must match the host

Selected Exos models support 512e and 4Kn FastFormat, but the current active format still has to be supported by the controller, operating system and storage appliance.

Security variants use different exact models

ISE and SED models should not be treated as interchangeable. Buy the exact capability required by the storage policy.

Enterprise cooling and acoustics

Plan for airflow, vibration isolation and spin-up power. A drive that works in a rack may be intrusive in a quiet room.

Use price per TB after compatibility

Compare only compatible new exact models on the Exos prices page. A cheaper SAS, recertified or wrong-generation listing is not an equivalent purchase.
