Seagate Exos Model List: Generation, SATA, SAS, 512e and Security

Exos model numbers identify much more than capacity. This database keeps generation, interface, sector format, security class and recording technology attached to the exact model so Amazon variations cannot blend specifications.

Quick answer

Never buy an Exos drive from capacity alone. Match the full model number against the intended controller and storage appliance. In this database, SATA and SAS variants remain separate, X24 and Exos M 24TB remain separate, and specialist products such as MACH.2 or host-managed SMR are excluded from ordinary CMR comparisons.

Exact Exos models currently found in the catalogue

Only fresh, exact-model products returned by Amazon's new-condition search are eligible. Featured prices are shown when Amazon exposes them; products with no buy box are shown as buying options. Generation, interface, capacity, security class and exact model are enforced.

Interactive decision tool

Look up an exact Exos model

Select a model to see its generation, interface, sector format, security class and core specifications.

Read the entire model number

Small suffix changes can indicate a different interface or security configuration. For example, X24 model endings distinguish SATA ISE, SATA SED and SAS ISE products.

Generation is not encoded by capacity alone

A 16TB drive may be X16, X18 or X24. A 20TB drive may be X20, X22 or X24. A 24TB drive may be X24 or Exos M.

SATA and SAS require different hosts

SATA is the practical choice for ordinary desktop controllers and most consumer NAS devices. SAS is appropriate only where the controller or backplane explicitly supports SAS.

512e and 4Kn change host requirements

A 4Kn format may not boot or mount on older operating systems and appliances. Confirm support before conversion, and treat FastFormat as a destructive maintenance operation.

ISE and SED are different

ISE supports rapid cryptographic erase, while SED models add self-encrypting-drive capability. These are not marketing synonyms and should remain tied to exact models.

CMR and HAMR-CMR remain ordinary block devices

Current channel Exos M models use HAMR internally but present a conventional SATA block interface. They do not require host-managed zoned-storage software like Exos Xz.

Condition belongs in the identity record

A new Exos, Seagate factory-recertified Exos and seller-refurbished Exos can have very different warranty coverage. The commercial catalogue excludes non-new stock.

Use model lookup before price comparison

First identify the exact compatible model. Then compare prices on the Exos prices page so the cheapest listing is not a different interface or generation.

How Cloudzat evaluates Exos drives

Cloudzat attaches generation, interface, sector format, security class, recording technology, cache, transfer rate and warranty only to an exact model. Exos X16, X18, X20, X22, X24 and Exos M remain separate, as do IronWolf Pro and WD Gold comparison products. This prevents a SATA listing from inheriting SAS specifications or an Exos M drive from inheriting X24 data.

Live offers are screened for new single internal 3.5-inch drives and matched to an exact model. SATA and SAS are kept separate. SSDs, external drives, accessories, enclosures, servers, multipacks, MACH.2, Exos Xz host-managed SMR, other drive families and non-new listings are rejected. Warranty source and delivered-label verification remain essential.

Frequently asked questions

Exos model-number questions

Does the NM suffix identify SATA or SAS?
The entire exact model identifies the interface. Do not infer compatibility from a partial suffix or capacity.
What does FastFormat mean?
It is Seagate’s supported method for changing selected drives between sector formats such as 512e and 4Kn. The operation destroys existing data.
Is ST24000NM002H the same as ST24000NM001K?
No. The first is an Exos X24 model and the second is an Exos M model with different internal technology and published performance.
Can Amazon combine different Exos models on one page?
Yes. Variation pages and seller titles can mix capacities, interfaces or conditions. Verify the delivered label.
Are SED features automatic?
No. The host and management workflow may need to support the security feature. Without proper configuration, it may behave like a normal drive.
Why are MACH.2 and Exos Xz excluded?
They have different host and workload requirements and should not be treated as ordinary single-actuator CMR drives.
