Mini PCs for LM Studio

For LM Studio, choose a GMKtec EVO-X2 with 64GB for a capable compact starting point, or 128GB when larger models drive the purchase. Choose the AI X1 Pro-370 for smaller models and replaceable RAM. The MS-S1 MAX suits a shared workstation with fast networking and expansion.

Which model to choose

GMKtec EVO-X2, 64GB or 128GB

Best compact starting point for a larger shared-memory pool. Choose 128GB instead when your intended model and context need it.

Buying guide

Choose a desktop for the models you will keep

The EVO-X2 is our first comparison for someone who wants LM Studio in a compact computer and has already outgrown entry-level memory. The 64GB version fits a different budget from 128GB; neither is an automatic speed upgrade for every model. Buy 128GB because a particular workload needs the room, since the onboard memory is not replaced like ordinary laptop modules.

The AI X1 Pro-370 is the more adaptable development desk for smaller models. The MS-S1 MAX becomes attractive when the computer also serves other clients, accesses fast shared storage or needs expansion. For a single-user machine holding models on its SSD, paying extra for unused network ports adds little to the experience.

Distinguish the application from its runtime

LM Studio provides a desktop interface, but the runtime and selected backend determine how a model runs on the hardware. Current AMD guidance describes Vulkan and ROCm options. Use the supported runtime for your exact GPU and operating system, and inspect its status after loading a model. A desktop interface opening correctly does not prove that the model is using the intended accelerator.

LM Studio’s published system requirements are an installation starting point. They do not size every model or promise comfortable performance for a large context. Choose the complete configuration from your planned workload, leaving room for the operating system and the applications that remain open beside the model.

Plan context, downloads and a working API

Download one useful quantization first and learn its behavior before filling the SSD with alternatives. Longer context and parallel requests increase the working-memory requirement. Keep enough free SSD space for downloads and updates, and separate models that can be downloaded again from personal documents that cannot.

If you use the local server interface, test the client application you intend to connect. Confirm the model identifier, context setting and network access, then keep the service private unless you deliberately protect remote use. A successful chat in the desktop interface does not by itself validate a multi-user API deployment.

What should replace an unavailable model?

For a 128GB EVO-X2, compare an MS-S1 MAX with 128GB first. Keep the useful memory tier rather than accepting a smaller machine because its product name also mentions AI. For smaller-model work, another HX 370 machine with sufficient installed memory can be a reasonable alternative, but compare replaceable and soldered memory before deciding.

Choose a CUDA-capable desktop when a required tool makes that platform essential, even if LM Studio itself also offers other acceleration paths. Do not treat maximum supported RAM as supplied RAM. The amount included with the computer is the amount you can use immediately, and a proposed upgrade adds its own cost and compatibility checks.

Budget memory for the whole application

Choose a model size and a useful context window before choosing a computer. A model file is only one part of memory use: the runtime, attention cache, operating system, browser and other applications need room too. Four-bit quantization reduces weight storage, but it does not make every part of inference four-bit. A machine that loads a model with almost no free memory may become frustrating during a long conversation. For a first local AI desktop, 32GB suits smaller experiments, 64GB provides more working room, and 128GB is worth comparing when model capacity drives the purchase.

Shared memory and dedicated video memory behave differently. An integrated GPU uses part of the same physical RAM as the CPU. A discrete GPU has its own VRAM, and moving work between that memory and host RAM can reduce throughput. Do not add the two capacities together and treat the result as one equally fast pool. Choose a supported backend first, then enough memory for the workload and a reasonable reserve.

Build a useful local AI workspace

A 1TB SSD is a workable starting point for a few smaller models. Choose 2TB when you expect several large downloads, separate environments and your own documents. Keep projects and irreplaceable data backed up separately. An additional internal drive helps organize work but does not protect against the failure or loss of the whole computer. A fast network is useful when datasets live on a NAS; it does not automatically combine several PCs into one larger accelerator.

Plan for long sessions rather than a brief demonstration. Leave the intake and exhaust clear, use a stable power supply, and try a balanced power profile if the machine shares your desk with a microphone. Measure whole-system power if electricity cost matters. The adapter rating and processor power limit are not constant wall consumption. Buy an expandable system when you expect to change RAM or storage, and a fixed-memory system only after choosing the memory tier you intend to keep.

Test the workflow while returns are straightforward

Install the current supported application and graphics driver, then begin with a small model. Confirm which processing backend is active instead of assuming that an AI badge means your software uses the NPU. Load your intended model, run a realistic prompt, and watch memory use and response time through a longer exchange. For a shared service, test simultaneous requests as well as a single user. A successful download or a screenshot of a loaded model is not enough to judge a working setup.

Keep the application version, model format, quantization and power mode with any performance notes. Those details explain why two reports about the same processor can differ. For an alternative purchase, preserve the requirements that matter: usable memory, supported accelerator and necessary ports. A lower-memory replacement is not equivalent when capacity is the reason for buying. If your essential tools require CUDA or a replaceable graphics card, allow space and budget for an NVIDIA desktop instead.

Buying and support in the United States

Compare the complete local purchase cost, including sales tax where it is added at checkout, shipping and any parts needed to finish a barebone. The prices shown here use US dollars. A seller shipping from another country may offer a different return route or warranty arrangement from a domestic supplier. For a work computer, check who handles a fault and where the machine must be sent before choosing the cheapest listing.

Keep the invoice, exact configuration and serial number with your recovery information. Check that the included power adapter and cable suit your location, and use the operating-system edition required by your applications or organization. When a recommendation is unavailable, compare another model that preserves the workload requirements rather than choosing from price alone. Budget for a display, input devices and an independent backup if you do not already have them.

Questions buyers ask

Which LM Studio Mini PC is the best starting point?

Compare the EVO-X2 with 64GB for a capable compact system. Choose 128GB for an identified larger-model need, or an AI X1 Pro-370 for smaller models and replaceable memory.

Will more RAM make every model faster?

No. It helps a workload fit and avoids memory pressure. Runtime, accelerator support and memory bandwidth still affect response speed.

Can LM Studio serve another computer?

Its local server features can support client applications. Test your client and protect any network access; the server still needs enough memory for the requested work.
