Protectli VP2430e
The VP2430e is another fanless network appliance with four 2.5GbE RJ45 ports. Choose it for a four-port firewall, but it does not provide the VP2440e’s 10GbE SFP+.

What fanless actually means
A fanless Mini PC has no internal cooling fan and uses its chassis to move heat into the surrounding air. It eliminates fan noise and a moving part, which can help a router, kiosk or quiet desk. It does not make the whole setup silent if external disks, a switch or a UPS has a fan. Nor does it promise unrestricted performance. The enclosure needs open space, a suitable ambient temperature and an installation position that lets it shed heat during sustained work.
Pick by application
For a firewall with 10GbE links, the Protectli VP2440e has a fanless network-focused design. The V1210 is a smaller two-port choice when the network plan is simpler. An ASRock Industrial iBOX-260J is aimed more at embedded or industrial I/O. These are different purchases. Count WAN/LAN ports, verify controller and operating-system compatibility, and check any serial, display or mounting requirements. Do not pay for a 10GbE appliance when a small two-port router satisfies the task.
Check the configured components
Many fanless appliances are sold as barebones or with selectable memory, SSD and software. A low entry price may leave out the parts needed to boot. Confirm installed RAM, fitted storage, adapter, Wi-Fi and operating system for the exact option. Some fanless units offer eMMC, which may be enough for a small appliance but not a substitute for a large NVMe drive in every use. Add the missing parts and installation effort before comparing against a complete Mini PC.
Heat and sustained workload
Passive cooling has a thermal budget. A workload that looks fine for a short burst can reduce clock speeds during long compilation, transcoding or packet inspection. Read the manufacturer's ambient limits and mounting guidance, then look for testing of the exact chassis under the workload you plan. Avoid an enclosed shelf or a stack of warm devices. Measure the case temperature carefully and test the software's real throughput, rather than assuming a CPU label guarantees a particular sustained result.
Power and reliability
Fanless hardware can be a good fit for an always-on service, but electricity use still includes the whole computer, adapter and attached equipment. Use a wall meter to estimate typical watts, then enter your local tariff in the Mini PC power calculator. Keep airflow around the case and a backup of the configuration. No fan means one less mechanical failure mode, but SSDs, power supplies, firmware and external drives still need maintenance and a recovery plan.
Verify the delivered machine
Before checkout, check whether the selected option is complete, what ports are fitted and which power adapter is supplied for your region. On delivery, inspect the RAM and SSD, test every network or display connection, and run representative work for long enough to reveal heat problems. Set up recovery access before replacing a working router. Keep the packaging until the return period ends. A fanless label is useful only when the system also meets the actual software and I/O requirements.
Start with the job, not a brand
Write down what the computer will run before looking at a brand or a sale price. An office machine needs reliable everyday responsiveness, the right monitor connections and enough memory for browser tabs. A home server needs storage, recovery and network planning. Gaming depends heavily on graphics, memory bandwidth and cooling. A firewall is a network appliance with specific port requirements. Calling all of these products Mini PCs describes their size, not their suitability for your particular workload.
List hard requirements separately from preferences. If your router replacement needs three physical Ethernet ports, a single port system does not become suitable because its CPU is faster. If you plan to run several virtual machines, an inexpensive eight gigabyte configuration may force an immediate memory purchase. Use the selector for a shortlist, then verify the exact variant and software requirements before ordering.
Match networking to the plan
A single Ethernet connection can be enough for a desk PC or a simple home service. Dual 2.5GbE may matter for a router, a small lab or faster transfers to a compatible switch and NAS. Count physical ports and confirm the NIC model when an operating system or firewall depends on driver support. Terms such as multi-gig, Wi-Fi 6 and dual LAN should be checked against the selected product and a detailed port photograph or specification.
Do not infer a second LAN port from an accessory, a USB Ethernet adapter shown beside the system or a comparison phrase in a seller title. For OPNsense, network segmentation and failover may require more than a nominal port count. Check throughput against VPN, IDS/IPS and packet inspection needs using the project guidance. For ordinary office work, paying for ports you will never connect is unlikely to improve the experience.
Budget for the whole ownership period
The purchase price is only one part of cost. Add missing barebones parts, delivery, applicable sales taxes, warranty terms and any software or adapters the setup needs. An always-on system also uses electricity. Enter measured whole-system watts and your local tariff in the power cost calculator; do not use the processor TDP as the wall measurement. Compare the annual difference between two plausible systems instead of assuming a higher upfront price will always pay back.
A newer or more expensive system may be easier to expand or may provide features that solve a real problem. Equally, a modest machine can be the better value for a single known task. Check the date the price was checked on every offer. The checkout total may have changed, so confirm it before ordering.
Verify the order and test the delivered machine
Before checkout, reselect the exact RAM and SSD variant and confirm the seller, condition, operating system, return window and total. Keep a copy of the listing details and your order configuration. On arrival, confirm CPU, installed memory and storage in the system settings, then test the ports your workload actually depends on. Update firmware only through the manufacturer’s documented process.
Set up recovery before moving important data. Keep a separate backup of service configurations and files, and test restoration. Try representative media, virtual machines, monitors or network paths while the return period still applies. A good buying decision includes a way to discover a wrong configuration early and return or correct it without disrupting the rest of your setup.
