Which HDDs are compatible with DS925+?

Drive requirements have changed over time. Synology documents broader third-party HDD and 2.5-inch SATA SSD options when creating pools on 2025 DiskStation Plus units running DSM 7.3 or later. If your DS925+ runs an older DSM, check the policy that applies to the installed version before moving a drive or creating a pool.
Do not extend the same rule automatically to DS923+ or other pre-2025 DiskStations. Compatibility is tied to hardware family, drive type and software release together.
HAT3300, HAT5300 and third-party choices
Synology HAT3300-series disks target NAS use; HAT5300-series drives target more demanding enterprise scenarios. Third-party NAS drives may be good value, but evaluate the exact CMR model, workload class, warranty and Synology's compatibility status.
If Amazon has no eligible listing for a Synology HDD, the alternative section may show verified third-party NAS HDD offers. These are shopping alternatives only; they are not declared compatible without checking the official list.
3.5-inch SATA versus SAS and external drives
DS925+ internal bays are SATA bays, not general-purpose SAS backplanes. A SAS enterprise HDD is not a drop-in internal replacement, even if the capacity and form factor match. Likewise, an external USB drive is not an internal pool drive.
For internal NAS storage, filter for 3.5-inch SATA HDD or supported 2.5-inch SATA SSD as appropriate. Avoid caddies, trays, bare enclosures and “compatible with DS925+” accessories mistakenly returned by a broad product search.
Why M.2 SSD compatibility is a different question
The DS925+ has M.2 2280 NVMe slots, but Synology distinguishes SSD cache from supported M.2 storage pools. Rules and tested SSD lists for these roles differ from SATA hard-drive rules. Broader third-party HDD policy does not imply arbitrary NVMe devices are approved.

Buying a four-disk set intelligently
Match capacity and workload needs to usable-space targets and the SHR/RAID level you intend to use. Review per-drive warranty, seller condition and price per TB instead of simply taking the cheapest four ASINs. Ideally avoid all drives from the same questionable seller batch when reliability is critical.
After installation, run drive health checks, keep firmware and DSM updated, enable alerts, and maintain a separately managed off-site or cloud backup that you periodically test by restoring real files. Rebuildability is not a backup.
