Why older DS925+ advice is now incomplete

The DS925+ arrived during a period when Synology tightened drive policies on 2025 Plus models. DSM 7.3 later restored the ability to install non-validated third-party HDDs and create new storage pools on 2025 DiskStation Plus, Value and J-series systems. Articles written before that change can overstate the restriction.

The newer policy does not place every third-party drive on the HCL. It permits use while preserving separate validation and support categories.

Operationally supported versus validated

CPU, protocol, RAID state, encryption and client storage also shape results. Drive RPM is only one part of the path.

Choosing standard IronWolf or Pro

Standard IronWolf remains a logical home and small-office choice when 16TB per drive is enough and the workload stays within the mainstream NAS tier. Pro is more compelling above 16TB, for heavy sustained writes, larger expanded arrays or when a five-year warranty is important.

Neither family receives HCL validation merely because it is marketed for NAS. Verify the exact part number.

Upgrade to DSM 7.3 or newer, update the drive database, confirm the drive is not on the incompatibility list and back up existing data. Install the drive, review Storage Manager messages, run SMART tests and monitor temperatures during initial synchronization.

Document the unverified status before deploying the NAS for a client. Do not conceal it behind a generic compatibility claim.
