What compatibility actually means on Synology

There are three different questions: whether the NAS can electrically recognize the SATA drive, whether DSM permits a new storage pool, and whether Synology has validated the exact model for full support. A drive can pass the first two tests without appearing on the compatibility list. That distinction became especially important after DSM 7.3 expanded third-party HDD use on 2025 DiskStation Plus, Value and J-series systems.

How to use Synology’s compatibility list

Select the exact NAS model, internal tray and HDD category, then search for the complete Seagate part number printed on the drive label. Do not substitute a nearby model because the capacity is the same. For example, the two current standard IronWolf 8TB models have different model numbers, rotational speeds, power draw and acoustic specifications.

A listed result is stronger evidence than a retailer saying “works with Synology.” Synology also warns that hardware or firmware changes can affect compatibility and that the list can be updated. Save a screenshot or record of the tested model when building a business array.

DS923+ versus DS925+ is a policy difference

The DS923+ has a mature compatibility page that lists a wide range of standard IronWolf models through 16TB. The DS925+ launched under Synology’s newer drive policy. Its current HCL may show mainly Synology-branded drives even though DSM 7.3 allows non-validated third-party HDDs to be installed and used for new storage pools on 2025 DiskStation Plus models.

That does not make an unlisted IronWolf equivalent to a validated drive. It means the operating policy permits it while validation, firmware integration and support coverage remain separate considerations.

IronWolf Health Management is not guaranteed everywhere

IronWolf Health Management adds Seagate-specific health information on supported NAS combinations, but the feature is not universal across every model, capacity, NAS generation or operating-system version. Standard SMART monitoring remains the baseline even when an IronWolf drive works correctly.

Do not choose a drive solely because an old article shows an IHM screen. Confirm the current Synology and Seagate documentation for the exact NAS and drive, and keep scheduled SMART tests, data scrubs and backups in place regardless.

Choose standard or Pro for a Synology NAS

Standard IronWolf is normally the starting point for a home or small-office DiskStation using up to eight bays and capacities no higher than 16TB per drive. IronWolf Pro becomes relevant when the capacity target exceeds the standard range, the annual workload is heavier, the array is larger or the five-year warranty has clear business value.

Pro does not bypass Synology compatibility rules. A higher-duty drive still needs exact-model checking, and some very high-capacity Pro models may exceed what a particular NAS or HCL has validated.

Plan the RAID before selecting capacity

Start with usable capacity after SHR or RAID protection, not the number printed on one drive. Four 8TB drives in SHR or RAID 5 provide a different balance of usable space, rebuild exposure, noise and future expansion from two 16TB drives in RAID 1. Larger drives preserve bays but make each rebuild move more data.

Leave room for snapshots, packages, indexing and expected growth. Synology’s displayed capacity also differs from decimal manufacturer capacity, so the final volume will be smaller than the simple raw total.

A safe installation workflow

Update DSM and the drive database first. Confirm that the NAS is healthy, back up existing data, install one exact-model drive for initial testing when practical, and review Storage Manager for unverified or incompatible warnings before committing an entire set. Run short and extended SMART tests before loading irreplaceable data.

For an existing protected pool, replace drives one at a time and allow each repair to finish. Never assume RAID replaces an independent backup.

When an unverified drive is still a reasonable choice

An unverified IronWolf can be reasonable in a home lab or cost-sensitive installation when DSM explicitly permits the configuration, the model is not on an incompatibility list, the owner understands limited support and there is a tested backup. The same choice may be unsuitable for a client system that depends on vendor support contracts.

The decision should be documented rather than hidden. Record the NAS, DSM version, drive model, firmware, purchase source and date of the compatibility check.
