Start with usable capacity, not the advertised drive size
An N300 price only becomes meaningful after the RAID layout and required usable capacity are known. Four 8TB drives provide 32TB raw, but a single-parity layout leaves roughly 24TB before filesystem overhead, while dual parity or RAID 10 leaves about 16TB. Buying the cheapest individual drive can be a false economy when the chosen capacity forces an extra bay, a larger enclosure or an earlier replacement cycle.

It does not mean every capacity performs or sounds the same, because platter count, enclosure fill, firmware and mechanical design still vary.
The current 4TB through 12TB models are rated up to 281MB/s with 512MB cache. Toshiba's May 2026 sheet then splits the upper range: the retail HDWG51EEZSTA 14TB remains a 512MB, eight-bay model but rises to 294MB/s, while MN11ACA14TS and the current 16TB, 18TB and 20TB MN11 models use 1024MB cache, support up to twelve bays and are rated up to 294MB/s. Exact model numbers matter because retailers keep older N300 stock
Search results can mix HDWG, HDWN, HDWQ, MN10 and MN11 identifiers, retail packaging, bulk drives and discontinued revisions. The latest official sheet even lists two current 14TB profiles with different cache and bay support. Older N300 listings do not share every specification with current HDWG and MN-series models, so a family badge and capacity label are not enough for an accurate comparison.
Before checkout, record the complete model number shown by the seller and compare it with the specification table. Confirm whether the listing is new retail stock, new bulk stock, renewed or used. Bulk drives can be legitimate, but packaging, regional warranty handling and included documentation may differ.
