That shared positioning means a broad family-level winner is less useful than a model-level comparison. Price, capacity, rotational speed, acoustics and compatibility can reverse the decision from one size to another.
Brand loyalty can simplify replacement planning, but it should not override an exact-model mismatch. A quiet 5,400 or 5,640 RPM drive may suit a living-room NAS better than a faster 7,200 RPM model, while a multi-gigabit editing NAS may benefit from the higher transfer tier. Current standard IronWolf spans 2TB through 16TB. The WD Red Plus data sheet currently covers 2TB through 12TB, with multiple model variants at some capacities. Model suffixes matter. Retail listings may combine old and new revisions under one title or variation selector. Verify the model in the selected capacity, not merely the parent listing headline. Both families contain lower-RPM and 7,200 RPM products.
