Two 8TB IronWolf drives, two different experiences
Seagate’s current standard IronWolf table lists two 8TB models. ST8000VN002 runs at 5,400 RPM, while ST8000VN004 runs at 7,200 RPM. Both are CMR NAS drives with 256MB cache, rotational-vibration sensors, a 180TB-per-year workload rating, one-million-hour MTBF, three-year warranty and three years of Rescue coverage where available.
The shared capacity can hide the difference on retailer pages. A title may say “IronWolf 8TB” while the variation, image or specification panel reflects another model. Check the model in the selected offer, order confirmation and physical label before adding the drive to an array.
Performance difference in context
ST8000VN002 lists a maximum sustained transfer rate of 202MB/s. ST8000VN004 lists 210MB/s. That eight-megabyte-per-second specification gap is small compared with the difference in rotational speed, power and acoustics. In a one-gigabit NAS, both can exceed the practical network ceiling during large sequential transfers.
The faster model may have value in multi-gigabit arrays, rebuilds, scrubs or simultaneous activity, but the NAS processor, RAID layout and network can still dominate. Do not assume 7,200 RPM will transform a lightly used home backup box.
Power consumption is the largest paper difference
The official data sheet lists 5.3W average operating power and 4.0W idle for ST8000VN002. ST8000VN004 is listed at 10.1W operating and 7.8W idle. Across four drives running continuously, that difference can add heat and a meaningful amount of annual electricity.
Actual consumption varies with workload, standby behavior and NAS firmware, so the calculator is an estimate rather than a meter reading. Still, the official gap is large enough to include in the purchase decision, especially where electricity is expensive or the NAS sits in a poorly ventilated cabinet.
Acoustics and room placement
ST8000VN002 is listed at 25dBA idle and 26dBA seek. ST8000VN004 is listed at 28dBA idle and 32dBA seek. Decibels are logarithmic, and four drives seeking together can make the array noticeably more intrusive than the single-drive number suggests.
Chassis resonance can matter as much as the drive. Tight trays, rubber isolation, a stable surface and fan control all influence the final result. For a bedroom, living room or desk-side NAS, the lower-RPM model has the clearer paper advantage.
Price per terabyte and the model premium
Compare current price per terabyte separately for each exact model. A retailer may discount the faster model, eliminate the normal premium or combine the variants under one price range. The cheapest 8TB offer is not useful if the model is unclear or the condition is not new.
For a multi-drive purchase, multiply the difference by every bay and add estimated electricity. A small upfront saving can disappear over several years if the selected model consumes materially more power than the alternative.
RAID planning with 8TB drives
Four 8TB drives provide 32TB raw. A simplified RAID 5 estimate is 24TB decimal usable before file-system overhead; RAID 6 is 16TB; RAID 10 is also about 16TB. Two drives in RAID 1 provide about 8TB before overhead. These figures show why raw capacity should not be used as the storage target.
Large 8TB arrays also consume bays quickly. Compare four 8TB drives with two 16TB drives or three 12TB drives, considering fault tolerance and future expansion. Fewer larger drives may reduce power and leave bays open, while more spindles can improve some throughput patterns.
Replacement and mixing considerations
If an existing array already uses ST8000VN002 or ST8000VN004, matching the same model can simplify expectations for performance, power and acoustics. A different 8TB IronWolf may still rebuild successfully in a compatible NAS, but it does not become identical to the remaining drives.
Before replacement, confirm sector format, firmware, NAS approval and array rules. Back up important data before a rebuild. The rebuild itself is a period of elevated activity and reduced redundancy, so monitor temperature and SMART status.
Who should buy each 8TB model
ST8000VN002 is the better starting point for quiet home storage, backup, photos and media libraries where the network is one gigabit and continuous power matters. ST8000VN004 makes more sense when its current price is compelling or the workload can use the faster rotational tier and the NAS is located where extra noise and heat are acceptable.
Neither model removes the need for backup. Run an extended drive test before deployment, confirm warranty eligibility and keep the exact model number in your maintenance records.
