A retail family name is often insufficient because manufacturers sell several motherboard revisions or laptop configurations under similar names. Record the exact motherboard model and revision, or the complete laptop product number. The checker stores this only in the browser result and asks you to enter the host specifications. A manufacturer manual, support page or trusted compatibility scanner remains the best source for maximum capacity and slot layout.

DDR generation is a hard boundary

DDR4 and DDR5 use different key positions and electrical standards. They are not interchangeable, and an adapter is not a practical solution for an ordinary upgrade. If the candidate generation differs from the host, the checker returns an incompatible result immediately. This is more important than brand, heat spreader or rated speed.

DIMM, SODIMM and registered memory

Processor memory-controller limits

The motherboard may advertise a high overclocked memory speed while the processor specification lists a lower official rate. Running above the official rate can still be common on enthusiast systems, but it depends on profile support and silicon quality. Enter the practical host maximum you intend to use, not merely the largest number printed on the board box.

Apple and soldered-memory systems

Many modern Apple computers and a growing number of Windows laptops integrate memory into the package or motherboard. A retail DIMM or SODIMM cannot upgrade those systems. The checker assumes the host has a replaceable slot because it cannot inspect the hardware. Verify serviceability before using any compatible result as a purchase decision.

Returning to a known-good configuration

Before changing memory, record firmware settings and keep the original modules available.
