Design around the slowest important path
A 10GbE NAS cannot deliver 10Gbps to a computer connected through 1GbE, and a Wi-Fi 7 router cannot make an older Wi-Fi 5 client behave like a Wi-Fi 7 device. The builder separates the internet path, wireless path and local file-transfer path before recommending hardware.
Use wired backhaul where it matters
Mesh systems perform best when nodes can communicate through Ethernet. Wired backhaul also keeps more wireless capacity available for client devices. Existing Cat5e may support 2.5GbE over useful home distances, while new 10GbE runs are better planned around Cat6a.
Buy enough ports for the finished network
A switch should have ports for the router, NAS, home server, access points and wired rooms, plus spare capacity. The recommendation rounds the current requirement up to a practical five, eight or sixteen-port class.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Wi-Fi 7 for a multi-gig network?
No. Wired 2.5GbE or 10GbE can be useful even when the wireless network remains Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Wi-Fi 7 is most valuable when compatible clients, fast local transfers and suitable spectrum are available.
Is Cat5e enough for 2.5GbE?
Often, yes, especially on normal residential runs with good terminations. Cable quality and distance still matter, so real installations should be tested rather than assumed.
Should I buy a managed switch?
An unmanaged switch is simpler for basic connectivity. A managed switch becomes useful for VLANs, link aggregation, traffic monitoring, PoE controls and more complex homelab or business networks.
