Choose ports around the whole network
Count the router, NAS, server, access points and wired rooms before selecting a switch. An eight-port model often leaves more useful expansion room than a five-port model.
An SFP+ uplink can preserve an upgrade path
Some 2.5GbE switches include one or two 10Gbps SFP+ uplinks. This can connect a faster NAS, aggregation switch or another room without replacing every client port.
PoE changes the power budget
A PoE switch can power access points and cameras through Ethernet. The port standard and total wattage budget must be checked, not just the presence of a PoE label.
Frequently asked questions
Will 2.5GbE work with gigabit devices?
Yes. Multi-gig Ethernet ports normally negotiate down to the fastest speed supported by both ends.
Do I need Cat6 for 2.5GbE?
Cat6 is a sensible choice for new runs, but many good Cat5e installations can support 2.5GbE.
Is an unmanaged switch enough for a NAS?
Yes for simple connectivity. Managed features are useful for VLANs, link aggregation, traffic controls or diagnostics.
