How to use the Hard Drive Price Tracker
Start by selecting the drive class that matches the job. NAS drives are tuned for multi-bay systems and continuous operation, enterprise drives emphasize workload and capacity, surveillance drives target sustained camera writes, and external desktop drives bundle a USB enclosure and power supply. Comparing all of them in one undifferentiated list can make a cheap but unsuitable drive appear to be the best deal.
After narrowing the class, choose the required capacity and interface. SATA and SAS offers remain separate because many home NAS systems cannot use SAS drives. Finally, compare the total purchase price, price per terabyte, condition and warranty. A recertified enterprise drive may lead on price per terabyte while a new NAS drive offers a simpler warranty path.
Why condition changes the meaning of an HDD price
New, manufacturer-recertified, Amazon Renewed, seller-refurbished and used drives are not equivalent products. Manufacturer-recertified stock may have been inspected and relabelled by the manufacturer, while seller-refurbished and server-pull drives can vary greatly in prior use and warranty coverage. Cloudzat stores these conditions separately and does not allow a used drive to reset the benchmark for new hard drives.
Before buying a non-new drive, verify the warranty provider, return period, packaging, power-on hours policy and whether the seller publishes a testing process. The lowest price per terabyte is useful only when the condition and risk are acceptable.
CMR and SMR labels
Conventional magnetic recording and shingled magnetic recording can behave differently under sustained random writes and RAID rebuilds. The tracker displays CMR or SMR when the exact product information provides a clear label. Unknown means the recording method could not be confirmed from the available listing data, not that the drive is necessarily SMR.
Model number matters. Manufacturers can sell several revisions within one family or capacity, so confirm the exact part number before relying on an interface, spindle speed, cache or recording-technology claim.
Why price per terabyte needs context
Large enterprise drives often lead on raw price per terabyte, especially when recertified, but a home user may value lower noise, lower idle power or a retail warranty more highly. External drives can also look unusually inexpensive because manufacturers price the complete product differently from a bare internal drive. Do not assume that every external model is suitable for removal from its enclosure.
For an array purchase, multiply the drive count before deciding. A difference of only a few dollars per terabyte becomes significant across four, six or eight drives, but so do power consumption, noise and warranty handling.
How hard-drive history is recorded
The price-history chart follows the effective offer price and price per terabyte over time. Cloudzat calculates the median and percentile values from verified in-stock offers, and the main chart defaults to new hard drives so temporary used or recertified listings do not distort the market view.
Historical comparisons become available as enough price history is collected.
Methodology and disclosure
The engine normalizes exact model, capacity, drive class, interface, condition and offer price. It excludes SSDs, memory cards, empty NAS enclosures, docks, drive trays, cables, accessories, conflicting-capacity listings and detected multi-drive packs. SAS and SATA products remain distinguishable, and suspiciously cheap offers stay out of public benchmarks pending review.

Why are some very cheap HDD listings missing?
The listing may be a multi-drive pack, accessory, enclosure, capacity mismatch, wrong storage type or high-risk offer.
Can I compare SAS and SATA drives?
Yes, but use the interface filter. A SAS drive normally requires a compatible controller and should not be purchased for an ordinary SATA-only NAS.
Does Unknown recording technology mean SMR?
No. It means the available listing data did not provide enough evidence to label the exact model as CMR or SMR.
Why use the median price per TB?
The median is less affected by one clearance listing, coupon error or unusually expensive product than a simple average.
