Dual Boot Windows and Linux on a Mini PC Canada
For a new dual-boot Mini PC, choose an AI X1 Pro-370 for several SSD positions or a SER8 for a two-drive setup that fits your work. Compare the NUC 14 Pro when its exact storage layout suits the plan. Back up first, keep encryption recovery information and follow the current installer’s guidance for the actual Windows layout.
- Back up first. Keep a verified independent copy and encryption recovery information.
- Identify the destination. Match the drive model, capacity and proposed partition changes.
- Test both systems. Confirm Windows, Linux and recovery after the installation.

Choose one shared drive or separate drives
For a new machine, separate supported drives can make the Windows and Linux storage plan easier to understand. The AI X1 Pro offers several SSD positions, while the SER8 is a useful two-drive comparison. The NUC 14 Pro can also be considered, but check the actual lengths and interfaces of its storage positions before ordering. Several sockets do not mean every drive is the same size or speed.
One SSD can also hold both systems when the layout and installer support it. It requires deliberate space allocation and a recovery plan. Separate drives reduce some partitioning complexity but do not automatically make boot files independent. Check where the installer places its boot components rather than relying on the presence of a second physical drive.
Prepare Windows and recovery before installation
Make an independent backup and verify that it can be read elsewhere. Keep Windows recovery media and any BitLocker or device-encryption recovery key outside the Mini PC. Changes to boot settings can require recovery information, so obtain it while the current system still works. Do not discover after a firmware change that the only copy of the key is inaccessible.
Ubuntu documents how encryption affects installation alongside Windows. Follow the current instructions for your actual encrypted layout instead of forcing an installer to resize something it cannot safely interpret. Use Windows tools for appropriate Windows-side preparation and keep enough free space for normal updates in both systems.
Install deliberately and test both boot paths
Choose the supported UEFI installation route and identify the destination drive by its model and capacity. Read the proposed partition changes before accepting them. Avoid an erase-and-install option when the goal is to preserve the other system. Keep Secure Boot where the chosen distribution supports it rather than disabling security settings by habit.
After installation, boot Windows and Linux separately, then test restart, sleep and the peripherals in each. Check the firmware boot menu as well as any operating-system menu. Do not treat one successful Linux start as proof that Windows and its recovery path remain usable.
Keep shared files and updates manageable
Plan which files are shared and which belong to an operating system. Be careful with Windows volumes left in a hibernated or fast-startup state; follow the distribution’s guidance before writing to them. A shared data partition is convenient but still needs backup. Keep application settings separate when the programs expect different paths or formats.
Record a working boot arrangement and keep the installer USB available for recovery. Firmware and operating-system updates can change boot behavior, so test both paths afterward. If one supported dual-boot setup provides everything you need, avoid adding unnecessary partitioning tools and unofficial firmware. For ordinary experimentation, a virtual machine may be the simpler alternative to changing the boot layout.
Compatibility belongs to the exact configuration
Linux compatibility is more specific than a processor brand or the word Ubuntu in a listing. The wireless card, Ethernet controller, audio device, graphics generation and firmware can differ between revisions of the same product family. Start with the manufacturer’s operating-system statement and the distribution’s hardware or certification information. A certification for one SKU is not a blanket promise for every machine sold under a similar name.
For recent hardware, choose a supported distribution release with a suitable kernel and graphics stack. Do not assume that an old installer contains drivers for a new wireless card or GPU. Keep a wired network path available during setup if possible. A current live USB is useful for testing before installation, but a successful desktop boot is only the beginning. Test the features that make the computer useful for your own work.
Run a practical hardware acceptance check
Connect every display at the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. Check audio output and microphone input, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the USB devices you need. Try suspend and resume several times, then reboot with the peripherals connected. If you plan to use hardware video decoding, virtual machines or GPU compute, test those functions directly. Desktop graphics working correctly does not prove that every application can use the GPU for computation.
Record the model, BIOS version, distribution and kernel alongside any setup notes. This makes a support request more useful and helps you reproduce a working installation. Use firmware and drivers intended for the exact product. Avoid copying a BIOS image or a kernel workaround from a different Mini PC merely because the processors look similar. When a machine needs extensive unsupported workarounds for an essential feature, a vendor-supported Linux system can be the better purchase.
Choose the support arrangement you want to own
A Linux-preinstalled computer can put operating-system support and hardware support with the same supplier. A Windows Mini PC on which you install Linux yourself may offer better local buying options, but you take responsibility for the software installation and some compatibility diagnosis. Neither route is automatically right for everyone. Choose the first when predictable setup and support matter most, and the second when you are comfortable testing and maintaining the installation.
Back up personal files before changing partitions or operating systems. Keep recovery media and encryption recovery information where you can retrieve them without booting the computer. For an alternative purchase, preserve the required ports and tested hardware support, not just the CPU speed. A faster new wireless chipset with no suitable driver can be less useful than a modest system that works reliably with your supported distribution.
Buying and support in Canada
Use Canadian-dollar prices when comparing these systems. Include delivery and the applicable provincial or territorial taxes in your total, and check whether the seller ships from Canada or imports the machine. A cross-border offer can have a different return process, delivery schedule or additional charges. Do not compare an American promotional price with a Canadian delivered price as though the currency and purchase conditions were identical.
Confirm the included adapter, power lead and operating-system edition, then keep the invoice and serial number. For work or study, choose a support route you can use if the computer fails during a busy week. An alternative should preserve the required memory, graphics and connections, even when the brand changes. Add any missing display, keyboard, webcam or backup drive to the budget before deciding whether the compact system is good value.
Questions buyers ask
Which Mini PC is a useful dual-boot starting point?
Compare an AI X1 Pro-370 for several SSD positions or a SER8 for a supported two-drive arrangement. Check the exact storage layout before ordering drives.
Do two drives guarantee completely independent boot systems?
No. Boot components may still be placed on a shared EFI partition. Check the installer’s destination and keep a recovery method for both systems.
Should I disable encryption or Secure Boot automatically?
No. Keep recovery information and follow the supported installer procedure for the actual setup. Do not change security settings merely by habit.
