Size from the actual camera workload

Camera count alone is not enough. Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, substreams, AI analysis and remote viewing all change the compute and storage path.

Treat hardware acceleration as model-specific

Blue Iris 6 integrates Intel QSV/oneVPL and NVIDIA video acceleration, but the exact CPU or GPU must expose the required hardware features. Do not infer support from a family name alone.

Separate recording storage from the system drive

Keep Windows, the Blue Iris database and recorded video roles clear. Surveillance HDDs are designed for continuous recording, while SSDs can serve the OS/database or high-speed clip workflows.

Power and network are part of the recorder

PoE capacity, switch uplinks, UPS runtime and NIC bandwidth can stop a surveillance system even when the PC itself is fast enough. Plan the whole path from camera to disk.

Camera count × megapixels × FPS provides an aggregate pixel-rate number. It is useful for comparing two proposed deployments even though it is not an official Blue Iris CPU benchmark.

Recording capacity is derived from bits written over time

One megabit per second recorded continuously is about 10.8GB per day in decimal units. Multiply by total camera bitrate and retention days, then adjust for event-recording fraction and free-space reserve.

The drive recommendation follows retention capacity

Small archives may fit comfortably on one surveillance HDD. Larger archives may justify higher-capacity models or several recording volumes.

Multiple drives can also spread write workload and simplify replacement, but separate recording volumes are not automatically redundant. Decide evidence protection separately.

Blue Iris publishes an 8GB minimum and recommends more memory for high-megapixel cameras. Built-in AI and other Windows workloads add further pressure.

GPU direction starts with exact Intel graphics support

When a supported Intel iGPU is available and enabled, Blue Iris can use Intel hardware video acceleration. That makes the existing integrated graphics the first path to test in many systems.

Network choice should include playback as well as recording

Camera streams are primarily inbound, while remote viewing, exports and network storage can add other traffic. A recorder that fits within 1GbE during recording may still benefit from 2.5GbE when multiple operators review footage simultaneously.

Treat the calculated ingress as the floor and observe the actual switch and NIC counters during peak usage before upgrading to 10GbE.

UPS selection cannot come from VA alone

The calculator flags whether UPS protection is missing but does not generate a fake runtime. Actual battery time depends on recorder, switch, camera load, battery condition and the manufacturer’s discharge curve.

Measure watts for the recorder and PoE infrastructure, then use the exact UPS runtime chart. Decide whether the goal is a few minutes for graceful shutdown or continued surveillance through longer outages.

Storage redundancy and backup must be designed explicitly

A mirror can protect against one drive failure but does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, recorder theft or a site-wide event. Important evidence needs an independent retention and export strategy.
