Start with the workload, not the case
Backups and private cloud storage need reliability and drive connectivity. Plex adds media-transcoding requirements. Containers and virtual machines increase CPU and RAM demand. Local AI can move the build into an entirely different class because model size, memory bandwidth and GPU memory matter more than basic file-serving performance.
Plan for usable storage rather than advertised capacity
A pair of 12TB drives does not normally provide 24TB of protected usable capacity when configured as a mirror. Parity, snapshots, filesystem overhead and a second backup all consume space. The builder therefore estimates the future dataset first and then recommends a drive arrangement with headroom.
Treat power as a five-year operating cost
