Match the interface to the enclosure and Mac
USB 10Gbps, USB4 and Thunderbolt are not interchangeable performance labels. The slowest part of the drive, enclosure, cable or port determines practical speed.
Use APFS for a Mac-only library
APFS is generally the natural format for a drive dedicated to modern macOS use. A cross-platform format may be preferable only when the same drive must regularly move between operating systems.

Do local AI models need Thunderbolt storage?
Not always. USB 10Gbps can be adequate for an archive or smaller models. USB4 or Thunderbolt is more useful for frequent loading of very large models.
