Quick answer

Choose the 20TB tier when your retention calculation and available data bays require about 20TB per drive after redundancy and reserve. The preferred current search target is ST20000VE004, but verify every exact revision, NVR capacity limit and seller listing before buying.

20TB NVR retention and workload planner

Enter the measured or expected recording load. The result estimates usable capacity, retention, target fit and annual writes per active data drive.

Who should choose SkyHawk AI 20TB

The 20TB tier is designed for always-on NVR recording where ordinary desktop-drive assumptions are not enough. It fits systems that need a high per-bay capacity, continuous camera ingestion, concurrent analytics or a longer retention window without expanding the chassis immediately.

The correct answer still depends on the recorder. Check the exact NVR model, firmware, maximum supported disk size, partition support and approved drive list before purchasing. A SATA connector alone does not prove that a recorder can address the full capacity.

Exact 20TB model identity matters

The tracked revisions at this capacity are ST20000VE002, ST20000VE003, ST20000VE004. Cloudzat does not merge their cache, sustained-transfer, power or generation data. Amazon variation pages can expose several model numbers under one capacity selector, so the delivered label must match the model you intended to buy.

A seller title that says only “SkyHawk AI” and the capacity is not enough for specification claims. Use the complete ST model in the product title or Amazon model field, then verify it again on the physical drive.

Estimate retention from bitrate, not camera resolution alone

Camera count and resolution are useful starting points, but average bitrate controls storage consumption more directly. Two 4K cameras can use very different space when one records at a low variable bitrate and the other captures a busy scene at a higher constant bitrate.

Use the calculator on this page with the measured bitrate from the recorder when possible. Include audio, metadata, file-system reserve, export space and a safety margin. Motion-only recording should use a realistic activity percentage rather than an optimistic best case.

Understand the AI-stream and workload limits

SkyHawk AI is specified for up to 64 HD video streams and 32 AI streams, with a 550TB-per-year workload tier. These are design-envelope figures, not a promise that every NVR processor can handle the same number of channels or analytics events.

Compare the planned annual writes per drive with the workload tier. A large array distributes writes across multiple disks, while a single heavily used drive carries the full recording load. Read-heavy exports and analytics can also affect the system even when the raw camera count remains unchanged.

Plan bays, redundancy and rebuild headroom

The largest drive that fits is not automatically the best layout. A two-bay mirror sacrifices half the raw capacity. RAID 5 or RAID 6 consumes parity capacity, and a hot spare consumes another bay. Rebuild operations also need stable cooling and a healthy power supply.

Keep free-space headroom so the recorder can rotate footage cleanly. When replacing a smaller drive, confirm whether the recorder expands the volume automatically or requires a new storage pool, reformat or full array rebuild.

Power, heat and acoustics in an NVR chassis

High-capacity 7,200 RPM surveillance drives require airflow across the drive cage. The exact revisions differ in average operating and idle power, so do not assign one power figure to every model at the same capacity.

Normal seek activity can be more audible than a low-capacity desktop drive, particularly during indexing, playback or a rebuild. Persistent hard clicking, repeated disappearance or a health warning should trigger a backup or footage-export decision before prolonged testing.

Compare price per TB with the full system cost

Price per raw terabyte is useful, but it can hide the cost of unused bays, parity, a future migration and replacement downtime. A larger drive may reduce chassis count and power consumption, while a smaller capacity can offer better replacement flexibility and lower single-drive risk.

Compare fresh exact-model offers on this page and the broader SkyHawk price-per-TB page. Products without a featured Amazon buy-box price remain visible as buying options, but they are excluded from price-per-TB calculations until Amazon exposes a price.

Buying and installation checklist

Before ordering, record the exact model, seller, condition, regional warranty route and return policy. Reject listings for complete NVR systems, external enclosures, SAS drives, multipacks, renewed stock or another Seagate family.

Before installation, export critical footage, shut the recorder down cleanly, use a known-good SATA and power connection, update recorder firmware when appropriate, and initialize the disk through the recorder interface. Do not interrupt formatting or array creation.

How Cloudzat evaluates high-capacity SkyHawk AI drives

Cloudzat attaches recording technology, RPM, cache, transfer rate, workload, stream support and warranty only to an exact VE model. Revisions at 12TB, 16TB and 20TB remain separate so one drive cannot inherit another revision's cache or sustained-transfer specification.

Live offers are screened for new single internal 3.5-inch SATA SkyHawk AI drives. Standard SkyHawk, SSDs, external drives, SAS products, complete NVR or DVR systems, camera bundles, accessories, multipacks, other Seagate families and non-new listings are rejected. Stream figures do not replace a retention calculation or the recorder manufacturer's exact compatibility list.

Frequently asked questions

SkyHawk AI 20TB questions

Is SkyHawk AI 20TB CMR or SMR?

The tracked 20TB SkyHawk AI model revisions are CMR. Verify the exact model number because family names and marketplace variation selectors are not sufficient proof.

How many cameras can a 20TB SkyHawk AI support?

Seagate lists support for up to 64 HD video streams and 32 AI streams for the SkyHawk AI family. Actual camera count also depends on the NVR processor, firmware, bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate and analytics workload.

How many days will 20TB record?

Retention depends mainly on total bitrate, recording hours and motion activity. Use the calculator on this page with the recorder’s measured bitrate. Formatting, metadata, audio, reserve space and variable bitrate reduce the simple theoretical result.

Will every NVR support a 20TB hard drive?

No. SATA compatibility does not guarantee that the recorder firmware, controller and partitioning scheme can address the full capacity. Check the exact NVR model and current vendor compatibility documentation.

Does SkyHawk AI include Rescue Data Recovery Services?

Seagate lists three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services for selected models and regions, alongside a five-year limited warranty. Confirm eligibility with the seller and Seagate warranty lookup for the exact serial number and country.

Can I use SkyHawk AI in a normal desktop or NAS?

The drive uses SATA and may be recognized by other systems, but its firmware and warranty positioning are designed for surveillance recording and analytics. Choose a NAS or enterprise family when the dominant workload is general file serving, virtualization or higher transaction activity.
