Unraid is flexible about drive capacities, which can make surplus enterprise SAS disks attractive. The controller still has to expose each physical drive reliably because Unraid uses device identity to maintain assignments rather than treating every disk as an anonymous block device.

Why SAS is different in an Unraid array
Parity planning comes before the sale price
A cheap high-capacity SAS disk can change the parity requirement for the whole array. If a new data drive is larger than the existing parity drive, the parity drive must be upgraded first or at the same time.
Compare the complete upgrade cost, not only the discounted drive. Sometimes a slightly smaller enterprise disk is the better purchase if it avoids a second large parity purchase.
Health monitoring needs its own plan
Unraid documents that its normal SMART monitoring workflow does not cover SAS drives the same way it covers SATA. Buyers using SAS should know which HBA tools and operating-system utilities they will use to inspect errors, temperature and device status.
