Its controller is designed for USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 at up to 20Gbps, while current USB-C iPhones use a 10Gbps data path for this workflow. That mismatch does not prevent recording. It simply means the phone cannot deliver the drive's advertised computer benchmark speed.

    For a phone rig, the useful question is whether the T9 can hold a stable sustained write rate while staying within the power and thermal limits Apple publishes.     Apple also says the external device should be reformatted before each 4K120 ProRes recording session for optimal performance. Reformatting erases the volume, so this is a workflow requirement that needs a verified copy of existing footage first. It is not a casual troubleshooting step to attempt when the SSD contains the only copy.

    Power, heat and accessories

    Apple caps the external device's maximum power draw at 4.5W for direct ProRes recording. Samsung says its portable SSD products operate with low power and reports successful T9 testing, but the complete rig matters. A hub, monitor output, microphone interface or pass-through charger can introduce new power and negotiation behaviour even when each accessory works alone.

    Test in the same arrangement used for filming. If the T9 disconnects only after adding charging, the likely problem is the hub or power path, not the exFAT volume. If it fails after the device becomes hot, repeat the test in shade with airflow and a different mount. Do not cover the SSD tightly in insulating material.

Capacity planning should include the copy made after the shoot, not just the drive attached to the phone.

    ProRes file size changes by codec, frame rate, scene and implementation.
