    Apple’s support documentation lists clear requirements for direct external ProRes recording on supported USB-C iPhones. The storage device must be formatted as exFAT, password-encrypted drives are not supported and the cable must be USB 3 at 10Gbps or faster. The storage device must sustain at least 220MB/s for 4K60 ProRes and at least 440MB/s for 4K120 ProRes.

    Apple also specifies a maximum power draw of 4.5W for the cited high-frame-rate modes. A drive can be fast enough on a laptop but unstable on an iPhone if its power demand, hub or accessory arrangement exceeds what the phone path can supply.     Retail specifications usually describe peak sequential speed under a computer benchmark. Recording requires sustained writes without pauses. A compact SSD may begin above the requirement and then slow as cache fills or temperature rises. An almost-full drive can also behave differently from a fresh test sample.

    The cable is another common failure. USB-C only describes the connector. Some cables are designed mainly for charging and provide USB 2 data. Others support 5Gbps but not the 10Gbps path Apple requests. A hub can add power, but an unpowered or bandwidth-limited hub can also create the warning.

    Special caution for 4K120 ProRes

    For 4K120, Apple lists a 440MB/s sustained-write minimum and says the external storage device must be reformatted before each recording session to ensure optimal performance. Reformatting is destructive. Move every required file off the drive and verify the backup before following that instruction.

    This requirement makes 4K120 a stricter workflow than 4K60. A drive that records 4K60 reliably may still fail 4K120. The SSD must also remain under the power limit and maintain the physical connection while the phone, drive and environment heat up.

    Format, partitions and password protection

    Apple’s direct ProRes page specifies exFAT. The general Files app supports additional formats, but a drive appearing in Files is not proof that it is correctly prepared for direct ProRes recording. Use one data partition and a simple volume name. Avoid vendor password mode for this workflow because Apple states password-encrypted drives are unsupported.

    If the drive is NTFS, the iPhone may not use it as expected. If it is APFS, it may appear for general access but still fail the direct ProRes requirement. Reformat only after backup. On macOS, Disk Utility can create a GUID partition map and exFAT volume; on iPhone, Apple also documents formatting through Files on supported systems.

    Power, heat and accessories

    An SSD, hub, microphone and charging path can compete for power. A setup may work while idle and disconnect when recording begins. Use a powered hub designed for the phone workflow when direct power is insufficient, but verify that the hub preserves the required data rate and does not add instability.

    Heat matters on both sides. The iPhone and SSD can warm during high-bitrate recording, especially outdoors or while charging. Remove insulating cases where safe, allow airflow and avoid placing the SSD against the hottest part of the phone. A thermal slowdown that appears after several minutes is more revealing than a successful ten-second clip.

    A reliable recording and offload routine

    Treat the external SSD as camera media, not as the archive. Before a shoot, format and test it according to the recording mode. Afterward, copy footage to at least two destinations and verify the files before erasing the field drive. Label cables and accessories so the proven 10Gbps path is not replaced by a charge-only lead.

    Keep spare storage and a fallback recording setting. A lower frame rate or internal recording can save a shoot when the external path is unstable. Test the exact iPhone, app, codec, frame rate, SSD, cable and power arrangement together because changing one part can change reliability.

    When the SSD itself may be the problem

    Suspect the drive when it fails sustained tests on a computer, disconnects with multiple known-good cables, reports file-system errors or slows dramatically after a small amount of writing even when cool and mostly empty. Compare another qualified SSD on the same iPhone path to isolate the device.

    If the problem follows the SSD across the phone and computers, protect any readable data and contact the manufacturer. Do not continue recording to media that has already dropped frames or produced incomplete files.
