These drives share a brand but not a performance tier
The 990 PRO is Samsung’s premium PCIe 4.0 x4 consumer SSD with dedicated DRAM and near-interface-limit sequential speed. The original 990 EVO is a mainstream DRAM-less drive designed to operate through PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2.
That interface flexibility does not make the 990 EVO a Gen5 performance competitor. Its rated throughput is lower, and the architecture targets efficient everyday use rather than the 990 PRO’s peak random and sustained behavior.
