Buying guide

Choose two, three or four screens deliberately

For two ordinary office displays, the G3 Plus is the inexpensive starting point. For a four-display desk, the NUC 14 Pro has a documented multi-display design and is the first model we would compare. The AI X1 Pro-370 is the stronger integrated option when the same desk also handles heavier applications. Its several output types let you plan around the monitors you already own.

Count simultaneous active displays, not just connectors on a product photo. Some ports can share display resources or have different limits. Write down each monitor’s resolution, refresh rate and input, then map it to an actual output. A short connection plan prevents buying an unnecessary dock or discovering that the final screen cannot use the desired mode.

USB-C, USB4 and Thunderbolt are different claims

A USB-C connector does not establish video output. The port must support the relevant display function, and the cable or adapter must support the intended mode. On the NUC, check the documented Thunderbolt display arrangement. On the AI X1 Pro, use its published HDMI, DisplayPort and USB4 limits rather than assuming every output has the same bandwidth.

Also distinguish extending the desktop from mirroring. A basic HDMI splitter duplicates an image; it does not create another independent workspace. A dock that adds displays may use different technology with its own software and performance tradeoffs. Prefer native connections when they meet the requirement simply.

Plan refresh rate, scaling and practical use

Four office screens and a high-refresh gaming screen are different workloads. Displaying a desktop at high resolution is not the same as rendering a demanding game across it. Choose the computer’s graphics capability for the applications, then verify the physical output modes separately. Use cables appropriate to the connection rather than assuming every old cable supports the new screen.

Try mixed-resolution scaling before committing to the final desk. Text size, screen arrangement, wake behavior and where applications reopen all affect comfort. Test the displays together after sleep and after a full reboot. A port specification alone does not confirm that the whole desk behaves the way you expect.

Keep the setup understandable and expandable

Label cables when several displays are involved and record which output each screen uses. Leave accessible ports for peripherals rather than filling every connector with adapters. If you use a monitor with an integrated dock or KVM, check its host connection and switching behavior with the Mini PC before adding another box.

For an unavailable model, preserve the complete simultaneous display requirement. A two-output N-series computer is not equal to a four-display NUC just because both are office Mini PCs. Check the replacement’s exact specification and any added adapter costs. A clearer, slightly larger computer can be a better desk than a tiny one surrounded by unsupported display workarounds.

Buy for the working day you actually have

Count the applications that stay open together: browser tabs, documents, a video meeting, accounting software and remote desktop sessions. A simple reception desk needs less compute than a developer compiling projects during calls. Start with 16GB for a new general-purpose Windows desk and compare 32GB for heavier multitasking. A low-cost computer can be good value when it fits that work; a more expensive processor does not make a poorly equipped desk comfortable.

Check the complete setup rather than the processor alone. You need the right monitor connections, enough accessible USB ports and a dependable network. Include a webcam, headset and keyboard if the Mini PC replaces a laptop. A 500GB or 512GB SSD can be sufficient for cloud-based office work. Choose 1TB when applications and local files justify it, and keep an independent backup for important documents.

Make the desk easy to support

Choose a complete computer when you want to unpack it and start work. A barebone may need RAM, storage and an operating-system licence, which changes both the cost and who supports the finished system. For several desks, consistent hardware and a documented recovery image often matter more than a small difference in benchmark scores. Record the exact model and hardware revision before buying additional units, because a familiar brand name can cover different network, storage and wireless components.

Keep airflow clear when using a VESA mount. Behind-monitor mounting can save desk space, but check cable access and whether the display already occupies the mounting points. Test wake from sleep, the network connection, a video call and the actual display arrangement during initial setup. These everyday behaviors determine whether a small computer is convenient. They are more useful acceptance checks than watching a promotional video or opening one empty document.

Spend on the parts that improve daily use

A good screen, comfortable input devices and reliable backup can improve the working day more than moving from a sensible midrange CPU to a premium model. Do not pay for a large NPU score unless your chosen application actually uses it. For a quiet office, compare measured noise when available and choose placement that keeps the fan away from a microphone. A fanless system suits some light tasks, but its cooling and sustained workload still need to match.

If you are buying for someone else, write a short acceptance list: open the required applications together, run a meeting, connect every display, print a document and recover a sample file from backup. Keep the purchase record and recovery information somewhere accessible. When choosing an alternative model, preserve the installed RAM, required ports and service arrangements. A cheaper unit with fewer display outputs or an unsupported Windows edition can create more work than it saves.

Buying and support in the United States

Compare the complete local purchase cost, including sales tax where it is added at checkout, shipping and any parts needed to finish a barebone. The prices shown here use US dollars. A seller shipping from another country may offer a different return route or warranty arrangement from a domestic supplier. For a work computer, check who handles a fault and where the machine must be sent before choosing the cheapest listing.

Keep the invoice, exact configuration and serial number with your recovery information. Check that the included power adapter and cable suit your location, and use the operating-system edition required by your applications or organization. When a recommendation is unavailable, compare another model that preserves the workload requirements rather than choosing from price alone. Budget for a display, input devices and an independent backup if you do not already have them.

Questions buyers ask

Which Mini PC should I choose for four monitors?

Start with the NUC 14 Pro’s documented quad-display arrangement. Check the exact SKU, connections and display modes together before buying cables or a dock.

Does every USB-C port support a monitor?

No. The port needs the appropriate display function, and the cable or adapter must support the desired resolution and refresh rate.

Will an HDMI splitter create two separate desktops?

A basic splitter mirrors the same image. Independent extended displays need suitable separate outputs or a supported multi-display solution.
