    First confirm that the drive is actually missing

    Open the Files app, tap Browse and look below Locations. If Locations is not visible, tap Browse again. Some apps do not display every external volume even when Files does, so Files is the best baseline. If the drive appears there and can open a folder, the storage connection is working and the remaining problem may be limited to the camera or editing app.

    Wait several seconds after connecting. Large volumes or drives that were not cleanly ejected can take time to appear. If the volume appears briefly and vanishes, that pattern points more strongly to power, cable or connector instability than to a completely unsupported format.

    Apple’s format and partition requirements

    Apple says the external device must have only a single data partition. Supported formats include APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT, FAT32 and FAT. A Windows NTFS volume is not on that list. Vendor-specific secure partitions or multiple volumes can also prevent straightforward use.

    Check the layout on a Mac or PC without changing it. On macOS, Disk Utility can show the physical disk, partition map and volumes. On Windows, Disk Management can show the same structure. Do not accept an initialize or format prompt when the drive contains the only copy. First move the data using a computer that can read the existing format.

    Lightning iPhone diagnosis

    Lightning models usually need an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter or Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. Storage devices often draw more power than the phone can provide through a simple adapter. The USB 3 camera adapter can be connected to a USB power adapter, allowing the storage path to receive additional power.

    Do not assume every inexpensive adapter supports storage, data and power correctly. If the drive works on a USB-C iPhone but not through Lightning, the adapter and power arrangement are the first differences to test. Large bus-powered hard drives are more demanding than compact flash drives and portable SSDs.

    How to identify a power problem

    Power problems often look intermittent. The SSD light turns on, Files briefly lists the volume, then the drive disappears when an app starts reading or writing. The phone may display an accessory power warning, or the setup may work until another device is connected to the same hub.

    Use a powered hub or adapter appropriate for the iPhone and verify that it also preserves data bandwidth. Power delivery and data speed are separate properties. A charging accessory can stabilize power while still limiting an SSD to an unsuitable data rate for ProRes.

    How to change format without losing the only copy

    Reformatting erases the selected volume. Copy the data to another verified location first, open several files from the backup and only then prepare the SSD. For broad iPhone, Mac and Windows compatibility, exFAT is the usual choice. For a Mac-only storage workflow, APFS can be suitable, but direct ProRes recording has its own exFAT requirement.

    Create one data partition. Keep the partition map and volume simple, then eject the drive correctly before reconnecting it to the iPhone. If the SSD repeatedly becomes unreadable after clean formatting, the problem is more likely to involve the cable, enclosure, power or hardware.

    Samsung T7, T9 and other portable SSD considerations

    Samsung T7-series and T9 drives can work with USB-C iPhones, but password mode can block certain workflows and the cable must support data. A T9 does not need its full 20Gbps PC capability to appear in Files; detection and maximum speed are separate questions. SanDisk, Crucial and Kingston drives follow the same basic format, cable and power rules.

    If one specific SSD fails while another appears on the same iPhone, compare capacity, power draw, format, partition layout and security settings. Do not conclude that the phone has a universal storage problem from one device.

    When to suspect the SSD or enclosure

    Suspect hardware when the drive is absent on multiple computers and iPhones, disconnects when the connector is touched, reports read errors or fails with two known-good cables. If the drive contains valuable data, stop formatting attempts. A manufacturer can replace eligible hardware, but data recovery is a different service.

    Document serial number, purchase date, cable tests and the operating systems used. If the device is an NVMe enclosure rather than a sealed portable SSD, test the enclosure and the internal drive separately only when you understand the warranty and static-safety implications.

    When the drive appears but ProRes still fails

    A volume visible in Files has passed the general storage-access test, but direct ProRes recording adds stricter conditions. Apple requires exFAT, no password encryption, a 10Gbps USB 3 cable and sustained write speed of at least 220MB/s for 4K60 or 440MB/s for 4K120 on supported models.
