Shopping HGST Ultrastar drives is confusing because the original HGST badge still appears on refurbished He8, He10, He12 and 7K-series units, while many later models use Western Digital names. Start by confirming capacity, full model code, interface and seller condition before comparing prices.
Start with capacity and interface, then use the printed model number to identify the generation. The He10 10TB is a strong starting point for capacity-minded buyers, but a 7K4000 4TB replacement and a He12 12TB upgrade solve very different problems.

Only positively identified Ultrastar-family hard drives qualify. Compare true capacity, model number, seller condition and price per TB. Verified Amazon prices may change.
Potential percentage savings appear only when a fresh Amazon listing includes an independently identified reference price for the same ASIN. If Amazon does not provide a suitable reference price, we show no discount badge.

Why this advice makes sense
Compare real buying choices
| Choice | Best use | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Exact family model | Replace a specified HGST disk | Match the full part number, interface and sector format |
| Refurbished offer | Lower initial cost when acceptable | Verify condition, power-on data, returns and seller warranty |
| Other enterprise HDD | Compare total cost for your capacity | Confirm controller/NAS fit and avoid assumed drop-in compatibility |
Comparing price per TB
Use the same currency and actual capacity, and confirm drive condition before purchasing.
Compatibility, seller condition and warranty also matter.
HGST Ultrastar buying details for this drive family
Practical details that matter when comparing exact HDDs, capacities and configurations.
Understand the generations
He8 covers 6TB and 8TB helium models, He10 introduced higher capacities including 10TB, and He12 / DC HC520 covers 12TB. The 7K4000 and 7K6000 generations are older conventional enterprise drives with different part-number families.
Do not infer the interface from the HGST badge. Some generation families were offered in both SATA and SAS configurations; verify the full part number and the system that will receive the disk.
Compare purchase conditions
For an older Ultrastar, a lower purchase price can reflect years of use, removed OEM packaging, recertification, or a seller-specific warranty. Evaluate the seller return period and documented test procedure before treating two offers as equivalent.
If available, ask for a SMART health report and verify power-on hours, pending/reallocated sectors and transport damage before storing irreplaceable data. Reconditioned disks should still be backed up.
Choose by workload
A small home NAS may benefit more from a compatible 8TB or 10TB SATA disk than from the cheapest large SAS offering. A server with an SAS HBA may support configurations that a consumer motherboard does not.
For RAID rebuilds or pool replacements, confirm sector format, minimum usable capacity and manufacturer compatibility rules. Matching the printed TB figure alone does not guarantee a drop-in replacement.
What happens if listings are limited?
An older Ultrastar model may have only a few legitimate offers on Amazon at any given time. Rather than display unrelated drives as exact matches, we keep the listing count honest and offer a manufacturer-model search as a separate action.
If no good exact replacement exists, evaluate an approved substitute and confirm its interface, sector format and condition before committing.
How we evaluate an offer
The price cards prioritize a correct part-number family, matching capacity and verifiable interface. Only offers returned by the site’s configured Amazon catalogue can show a verified price, and last-verified observations keep their original age.
We do not manufacture discounts, claim a laboratory test, or present used stock as new. An Amazon offer can change between verification and checkout.

Frequently asked questions
Is HGST Ultrastar the same as WD Ultrastar?
They are connected through Western Digital ownership and the continuation of the Ultrastar enterprise drive line. Check the exact generation and model code; the branding alone does not prove technical identity.
Can a SAS Ultrastar drive be used in a SATA-only NAS?
Usually not. SAS requires appropriate SAS-capable hardware, so check the appliance specifications and the full drive suffix before purchasing.
Is a refurbished HGST Ultrastar safe for important data?
A refurbished drive can be usable, but no single disk should be the only copy of important data. Review seller testing, return rights, SMART health and backups.
Does price per TB tell me which Ultrastar to buy?
Price per TB helps compare capacity cost, but interface, condition, formatted capacity, warranty and system fit are equally important.
