HGST Ultrastar He12 is the older name for the 12TB WD Ultrastar DC HC520 generation. Buyers seeking a specific replacement need the complete part number and interface, not only the marketing name.
Search for genuine HUH721212 He12 / HC520 drives and verify whether the listing is SATA or SAS. Buy by exact model, verified condition and seller return terms.

Why this advice makes sense
Compare real buying choices
| Choice | Best use | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Exact family model | Replace a specified HGST disk | Match the full part number, interface and sector format |
| Refurbished offer | Lower initial cost when acceptable | Verify condition, power-on data, returns and seller warranty |
| Other enterprise HDD | Compare total cost for your capacity | Confirm controller/NAS fit and avoid assumed drop-in compatibility |
HGST Ultrastar buying details for 12TB drives
Practical details that matter when comparing exact HDDs, capacities and configurations.
Identify HUH721212
The He12 model-code prefix identifies the relevant generation, while later characters may determine electrical interface, sector format and supported security features. Request a clear label photo for abbreviated or reused listings.
Be especially careful when a listing groups several variants under one title or uses a parent ASIN that can change after selecting a variant.
Enterprise workload versus home use
This product family targets demanding enterprise storage. A home lab or NAS buyer still needs to check power supply, mounting, controller support, vibration and acoustic expectations.
Manufacturer workload and reliability ratings are fleet-level targets, not a warranty for an individual refurbished hard drive.
Compare a true replacement with alternatives
A contemporary 12TB Seagate Exos or WD Gold listing may offer different conditions or warranty coverage. A comparison is useful only after verifying that both drives are suited to the host controller and are from credible sellers.
Do not classify competitor 12TB drives as exact He12 matches or place them in the He12 exact-offer section.
What happens if listings are limited?
An older Ultrastar model may have only a few legitimate offers on Amazon at any given time. Rather than display unrelated drives as exact matches, we keep the listing count honest and offer a manufacturer-model search as a separate action.
If no good exact replacement exists, evaluate an approved substitute and confirm its interface, sector format and condition before committing.
How we evaluate an offer
The price cards prioritize a correct part-number family, matching capacity and verifiable interface. Only offers returned by the site’s configured Amazon catalogue can show a verified price, and last-verified observations keep their original age.
We do not manufacture discounts, claim a laboratory test, or present used stock as new. An Amazon offer can change between verification and checkout.

Frequently asked questions
Is HGST Ultrastar the same as WD Ultrastar?
They are connected through Western Digital ownership and the continuation of the Ultrastar enterprise drive line. Check the exact generation and model code; the branding alone does not prove technical identity.
Can a SAS Ultrastar drive be used in a SATA-only NAS?
Usually not. SAS requires appropriate SAS-capable hardware, so check the appliance specifications and the full drive suffix before purchasing.
Is a refurbished HGST Ultrastar safe for important data?
A refurbished drive can be usable, but no single disk should be the only copy of important data. Review seller testing, return rights, SMART health and backups.
Does price per TB tell me which Ultrastar to buy?
Price per TB helps compare capacity cost, but interface, condition, formatted capacity, warranty and system fit are equally important.
