For most buyers, choose the Synology model by bay count, workload and upgrade path first, then use Black Friday to improve the price. DSM maturity is a major reason to buy Synology, but verify the exact model's network, memory, M.2 and drive rules before assuming that a discounted enclosure can be upgraded like another DiskStation generation.

Match the deal to the job

Compare current and previous DiskStation generations carefully

A Black Friday search can return both new-generation and older DiskStation models. Older hardware is not automatically a bad purchase, especially when the workload is simple, but the discount needs to compensate for differences in CPU, network capability, memory ceiling, expansion options and future software support. Compare exact model numbers rather than treating every Plus-series enclosure as interchangeable.

For buyers who already know DSM and want predictable administration, a discounted previous-generation model can be excellent value. For a first NAS expected to stay in service for many years, paying more for the newer platform may be sensible when the newer hardware solves a real limitation.

DSM is part of the purchase, not a free extra

Synology buyers often value DSM for backups, snapshots, file services, photos, packages and management. That software experience is part of why a DiskStation can be attractive even when a competing enclosure has stronger raw hardware at the same price. A Black Friday comparison should therefore look beyond processor specifications and ask which platform will be easier to run for the actual household or business.

The trade-off is that ecosystem policies matter. Check the current compatibility guidance for hard drives, M.2 storage, memory and network accessories on the exact DiskStation model. Do not infer one model's rules from another model or from an older DSM release.

Drive compatibility needs model-level verification

Synology's current drive policies have changed over time, and HDD, 2.5-inch SATA SSD and M.2 roles are not the same question. A third-party HDD allowance does not automatically mean an arbitrary NVMe SSD can be used for a storage pool. The safest Black Friday workflow is to choose the DiskStation, then verify the current compatibility and support position for the exact drives you intend to install.

Bay count determines how flexible future upgrades will be

Do not assume every Synology is the same Plex server

Plex performance depends on the exact CPU, graphics capability, software path and codecs. Some Synology models are better suited to direct play, while others can offer more useful hardware-accelerated options. The model name and Plus suffix are not enough evidence.

Network upgrades can change the real cost of a DiskStation

Conversely, paying for 10GbE is unnecessary when the clients and switch cannot use it.

For backups and normal file serving, 1GbE can still be adequate. For large photo imports, workstation editing or multi-user transfers, higher network speed may make the enclosure feel useful for longer.

Use pre-event pricing to judge the Synology sale
