Match the deal to the job

Start with the switch connector

The switch determines the simplest NIC choice. If the core already uses SFP+, a matching SFP+ card and DAC can create a straightforward short link. If the network is built around RJ45 copper, a 10GBASE-T card can avoid a media conversion.

Buying the NIC first can reverse that logic and force the rest of the network to adapt around a single sale item. Treat the Black Friday price as the last variable after connector compatibility is settled.

PCIe bandwidth and slot shape both matter
