SkyHawk for UniFi Protect
UniFi Protect storage is not a generic SATA decision. Ubiquiti currently recommends 1TB-or-larger CMR storage at 7,200RPM for rack-mounted consoles and publishes official 8TB, 16TB and 24TB HDD sizes. This page checks the exact console, drive bays, camera load and protection mode.
Quick answer
For current 3.5-inch UniFi Protect consoles, SkyHawk AI is the closer match because it is CMR and 7,200RPM. Standard SkyHawk models are 5,400RPM and are not the preferred choice for multi-bay UniFi RAID. CloudKey+ and UCG-Max use different storage form factors and cannot accept a normal 3.5-inch SkyHawk drive.

Current UniFi Protect storage profiles
| Recorder | Channels | Drive bays | Published per-bay size | Published total | SkyHawk direction | Important note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UDM-Pro | 24 | 1 | 24TB | 24TB | SkyHawk AI preferred | One 3.5-inch bay. Ubiquiti currently recommends 1TB+ CMR at 7200RPM and publishes 8TB, 16TB and 24TB official drive sizes. |
| UDM-SE | 24 | 1 | 24TB | 24TB | SkyHawk AI preferred | One 3.5-inch bay. Use 7200RPM CMR storage; 24TB is the largest currently published official UniFi HDD size. |
| UDM-Pro-Max | 50 | 2 | 24TB | 48TB | SkyHawk AI preferred | Two 3.5-inch bays with redundant NVR storage support; use 7200RPM CMR drives. |
| UNVR | 60 | 4 | 24TB | 96TB | SkyHawk AI preferred | Four drive bays. Current UniFi guidance recommends 7200RPM CMR drives and publishes official 8TB, 16TB and 24TB HDD sizes. |
| UNVR-Pro | 70 | 7 | 24TB | 168TB | SkyHawk AI preferred | Seven drive bays with RAID data protection. Use 7200RPM CMR drives. |
| UNVR-Instant | 15 | 1 | 24TB | 24TB | SkyHawk AI preferred | One 3.5-inch HDD bay; current storage guidance favors 7200RPM CMR drives. |
| CloudKey+ | 24 | 1 | 1TB | 1TB | Not compatible with 3.5-inch SkyHawk | Uses a user-upgradeable 2.5-inch SATA drive. Standard 3.5-inch SkyHawk and SkyHawk AI drives do not physically fit. |
The 24TB figure is the largest currently published official UniFi HDD size, not a universal electrical SATA ceiling. A 32TB SkyHawk AI drive should be treated as unconfirmed until Ubiquiti publishes support.

UniFi Protect camera and RAID capacity planner
Estimate capacity from HD, 2K and 4K camera counts, then apply the selected console bay count and protection mode.
Why UniFi favors 7,200RPM CMR storage
Ubiquiti’s current storage guidance recommends 1TB-or-larger CMR drives at 7,200RPM for standard rack-mounted consoles and says 5,400RPM is not recommended for multi-bay RAID or ZFS workloads. SkyHawk AI matches that rotational-speed direction; standard SkyHawk does not.
UNVR and UNVR Pro bay planning
UNVR provides four drive bays and UNVR Pro seven. Protection mode reduces usable capacity, so multiplying bay count by drive size overstates recording space. The planner subtracts a drive-equivalent for basic protection, two for advanced protection, or uses 50% for performance mode.
UDM Pro, UDM SE and UDM Pro Max
UDM Pro and UDM SE have one 3.5-inch NVR bay. UDM Pro Max has two bays and redundant NVR storage support. A single-bay console cannot provide drive-level redundancy by itself.
CloudKey+ and UCG-Max are different
CloudKey+ uses a 2.5-inch SATA drive and UCG-Max uses NVMe storage. A 3.5-inch SkyHawk or SkyHawk AI drive is not physically compatible with those consoles.
Published size versus unconfirmed size
Ubiquiti currently lists official 8TB, 16TB and 24TB HDD sizes. A larger SATA drive may be electrically plausible, but it should not be presented as supported until current UniFi documentation confirms it.
Camera load and retention
Camera resolution is translated into planning bitrates and then multiplied by days and recording activity. Actual Protect retention varies with scene complexity, camera settings, audio and software behavior.
RAID rebuild and replacement
Use equal-size drives where possible, replace a failed drive promptly and allow the array to rebuild without power interruption. Do not remove multiple drives while the array is degraded.

How Cloudzat evaluates recorder compatibility
Cloudzat separates the exact recorder model from the exact drive model. Bay count, published drive-size limits, form factor, firmware generation and storage architecture are attached to a named recorder profile. Standard SkyHawk VX and SkyHawk AI VE drives remain separate so a 5,400RPM standard model is not presented as equivalent to a 7,200RPM AI model.
Live offers are screened for new single internal 3.5-inch SATA drives. SSDs, external drives, SAS products, complete NVR or DVR systems, camera bundles, accessories, multipacks, WD Purple Pro, other Seagate families and non-new listings are rejected. A calculator result does not override the recorder manufacturer's exact compatibility list, hardware revision, firmware release notes or environmental limits.
Frequently asked questions
UniFi Protect SkyHawk questions
Can I use standard SkyHawk in UNVR?
It may be recognized, but current Ubiquiti guidance recommends 7,200RPM CMR and does not recommend 5,400RPM for multi-bay RAID. SkyHawk AI is the closer fit.
Does UNVR support 32TB SkyHawk AI?
Current published UniFi HDD sizes reach 24TB. Treat 32TB as unconfirmed until Ubiquiti publishes support.
Can CloudKey+ use SkyHawk?
Not a standard 3.5-inch SkyHawk. CloudKey+ uses a 2.5-inch SATA bay.
How many drives should UNVR use?
That depends on retention and protection. At least two drives are needed for protection, and more drives can improve usable capacity and resilience.
Can I mix drive sizes in UniFi Protect?
Mixed sizes can waste capacity or complicate protection. Equal models and capacities are the safer planning choice.
Does SkyHawk Health Management work in UniFi?
Do not assume it does. Use the health information exposed by the current UniFi Protect storage interface.
