A home server might be a quiet Plex machine holding movies, or a 24-hour box running backups, downloads, Docker apps and several active users. Those workloads do not need the same hard drive. Seagate’s current 12TB–24TB BarraCuda CMR models can fit lighter, mostly sequential storage, but a NAS-oriented or enterprise drive is often the safer buy for heavier service. What matters before you choose
For Plex and Jellyfin media storage
An HDD is sensible for large video and music libraries that are read sequentially. A single CMR BarraCuda holding media for one or two clients can be a cost-effective choice. Put thumbnails, database files and application caches on SSD to reduce random disk access.
The drive workload changes when many users watch concurrently, download heavily or transcode into temporary files on the HDD. Consider workload and noise before filling a chassis with many desktop disks.
Backups and archive servers
Periodic backup sets and read-mostly archives are more aligned with the desktop BarraCuda use case than continuously rewritten datasets. Remember that a full restore from 20TB or 24TB can take many hours or days depending on the rest of the system.
Use at least one copy outside the same machine, preferably outside the same room or site. Replacing a failed disk is straightforward; recreating irreplaceable data is not.
When to move to IronWolf Pro or Exos
If the box runs around the clock, serves several active clients, hosts camera recordings, performs nightly parity checks or rebuilds large arrays, compare higher-duty families. Seagate IronWolf Pro targets NAS installations; Exos X24 targets enterprise-like storage.
Their higher published workload and warranty classes do not guarantee no failure, but they better reflect intensive operating conditions. Buy the exact SATA model your backplane supports.
CMR matters for ongoing writes
The specific BarraCuda 12TB, 16TB, 20TB and 24TB models on this site use CMR. That is important for sustained rewriting and recovery processes where some SMR models can behave differently.
Do not assume a lower-capacity BarraCuda is CMR simply because a 20TB part is. Verify the model printed on the delivered label, especially with marketplace listings.
Sizing bays, usable space and parity
Raw capacity is drive size multiplied by drive count, but usable space is lower after parity, mirroring, formatting and reserve capacity. Four 20TB disks do not automatically provide 80TB of protected storage. Use the planner on this page to estimate a realistic layout.
Leave free capacity for snapshots, reorganizing datasets and recovery. Very large disks also increase the time and stress involved in rebuilding a failed array.
Power, cooling and noise
Ensure the PSU can handle all disks starting at once, not only their idle wattage. A small enclosure needs deliberate airflow around a row of 7,200 RPM disks. Audible seek noise and vibration may matter in a bedroom or shared room.
An SSD for the OS and services helps keep the bulk HDDs quieter. Monitor SMART data and drive temperatures, and test alerts before trusting the server.
How to shop for home-server hard drives
Compare total cost per usable TB at the level of the complete storage plan: drives, bays, redundancy, backups and electricity. A cheaper desktop drive may not be the cheapest arrangement if the server needs the features of NAS-rated disks.
Choose exact models and new condition, reject used server pulls when new drives are required, and review warranty eligibility from the seller.
