Begin with the job the NAS must perform
Backup, Photos, Plex, Docker, surveillance and virtual machines stress different parts of the system. A model that excels at simple file protection may be a poor container host, while a fast home-server NAS may add unnecessary complexity to family backup.

Usable capacity is not raw capacity

Plex must be classified as direct play or conversion
Direct play needs reliable storage and networking. Transcoding needs exact supported video hardware, Plex software support and usually Plex Pass. The difference can change the recommended brand and model.
Use the worst real client and remote connection in the input. A system selected from one local television may fail when a phone or subtitle-heavy stream forces conversion.
Containers and VMs need memory and SSD I/O

Do not choose QuTS hero merely because ZFS sounds safer. It changes the system design and does not replace backup.
Network speed should follow concurrent traffic
One client copying at a time may be satisfied with 2.5GbE. Multiple users, video editing, SSD pools or several servers can justify 10GbE. The NAS, switch and clients must all support the link.
The calculator treats built-in 10GbE as useful only when the workload and existing network can use it. Otherwise it remains future headroom.
Third-party drive preference affects brand fit
UGREEN and QNAP broadly support third-party drives but still publish exact compatibility information. Synology’s current HDD policy is more flexible on applicable 2025 Plus systems, while M.2 rules remain more restrictive.
A buyer who insists on specific third-party M.2 devices should verify support before choosing the enclosure. HDD flexibility does not imply NVMe flexibility.

A cheaper enclosure that consumes the entire budget can produce a weaker data-protection system than a modest NAS with complete backup.
