Initialization is a disk-structure operation

Windows initialization creates basic disk metadata so partitions can be defined. It is appropriate for a new blank disk, but it is not a general repair button for a previously working drive.

Start with hardware detection

If BIOS or UEFI does not detect the drive, Disk Management cannot solve the problem. Check SATA data, power, controller ports, enclosure compatibility and the physical installation first.

A new drive can show as unknown and not initialized

GPT is the modern default
