Connecting a SAS hard drive to a normal desktop PC usually means adding a PCIe SAS HBA. The HBA speaks the SAS protocol, while a forward breakout cable carries data from the controller to the drive. Power is provided separately or through a combined SFF-8482 cable depending on the cable design.
The dependable path is PC PCIe slot → SAS HBA → correct forward breakout cable → SAS drive, with the drive powered from the PSU or a compatible combined cable. A motherboard SATA port cannot replace the HBA.

SAS cables are not universal. Confirm the HBA, backplane and connector standard before ordering.
Why the connection path matters
SAS is a storage protocol, not merely a connector. A normal desktop SATA controller does not understand SAS signaling, so changing the physical plug cannot make the drive appear.
The PCIe HBA provides that controller function. Once the operating system sees the HBA and the card sees the drive, the disk can be partitioned and formatted like other block storage, subject to sector-format support.
Which connection path makes sense?
| Option | Best fit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| 9207-8i + SFF-8087 | Older 6Gb/s homelab | Forward 8087-to-drive cable |
| 9300-8i + SFF-8643 | 12Gb/s SAS3 desktop/server | Cooling and Mini-SAS HD cable |
| SAS backplane | Multi-bay chassis | Upstream connector and backplane support |
| Enterprise SATA | No spare PCIe slot | Use motherboard SATA instead |

How to Connect a SAS Hard Drive to a PC guide
Why the HBA is required
Match the cable to the HBA generation
Older HBAs commonly use SFF-8087 internal Mini-SAS ports, while many SAS3 cards use SFF-8643 Mini-SAS HD. Newer cards may use SlimSAS. The drive side is commonly SFF-8482 for direct-attached SAS HDDs.
Do not buy a cable solely because the product title contains “Mini SAS.” Check both connector numbers and whether the cable is forward or reverse breakout.
Power the drive without creating another compatibility problem
Direct-attached SAS drives still need power. Some breakout leads expose separate SATA-power connectors, while other assemblies combine data and power near the SFF-8482 drive connector.
Inspect the exact cable before ordering and avoid forcing connectors. If a drive does not spin, troubleshoot power separately from data so you can identify whether the problem is the PSU lead, cable, HBA or drive.

Frequently asked questions
Can I connect a SAS drive directly to SATA?
No. A SATA controller cannot operate a SAS drive. Add a SAS HBA or use a SAS-capable backplane.
What cable connects an LSI 9300-8i to SAS drives?
A 9300-8i commonly uses SFF-8643 internal ports. Direct drives typically need a forward breakout cable to SFF-8482 or the connector expected by the backplane.
Do I need a RAID card?
No. An HBA is usually the cleaner choice when you want the operating system to see the individual disks directly.
Why does direction matter on breakout cables?
Forward and reverse breakout cables wire the same connector families for opposite roles. For an HBA feeding individual drives, you normally need the forward direction.
