How to compare hard drives for a NAS

Start with the NAS compatibility list

Before choosing a drive, check the NAS manufacturer compatibility list and any capacity or firmware restrictions for the exact enclosure model.

Understand CMR and SMR

Recording technology can affect sustained writes and RAID rebuild behavior. The add-on only labels CMR or SMR when that signal is present in the available product data; unknown values are not guessed.

Compare workload and warranty

NAS drives are sold in standard and professional families with different workload ratings and warranty terms. Match the drive class to the number of bays, expected activity and importance of the data.

How this price comparison works

Cloudzat collects product and offer data through the Amazon Creators API used by the main Storage Prices plugin. This add-on applies collection-specific capacity, interface and product-type rules, enriches technical attributes from the available Amazon product information, rejects common accessories and ranks current offers by price per terabyte. Used and refurbished listings remain visibly labeled and are never blended into a new price.

Automated classification can be incomplete when a listing omits a specification or combines multiple variants. Follow the Amazon link and confirm capacity, interface, dimensions, cooling and condition before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a normal desktop hard drive in a NAS?

Some systems may accept one, but NAS-rated drives are designed and marketed for multi-drive, always-on storage workloads. Follow the enclosure manufacturer compatibility guidance.

What is the best NAS drive capacity?

The right capacity depends on required usable storage, RAID layout, growth, backup strategy and available bays. Compare total array cost rather than one drive in isolation.

Does this page include renewed enterprise drives?

The collection focuses on NAS-class products. Offers may include non-new conditions when allowed, but generic enterprise drives are not included solely because they can be used in a server.

Why is CMR or SMR sometimes missing?

Amazon data does not always state the recording technology. The plugin leaves the field unknown instead of inferring a specification that may vary by exact model.
